For anyone living down here in South Florida, east or west coast, you may have heard and felt a fairly large series of booms, that rattled windows and shook the floor...around 10:40am or so. Our own Space Shuttle returned to Earth today, and its flight path took it directly over the Everglades running south to north, up to Kennedy Space Center. In its descent and approach, it sends of a series of sonic booms as it slows itself over our airspace, and it's a pretty cool experience to both hear, and feel it!

Any other South Floridians experience this morning's sonic booms?

I heard it! My whole house shook and we went out to see if something had crashed or exploded in the neighborhood. Thanks so much for letting me know what it was. VERY COOL!!!

I didn't go outside, but I looked out the windows. A few minutes prior to the boom, our lawn service guy had started trimming the hedges. I was worried that something had happened to him.

Pretty cool, huh!

I just wonder how many calls the police and fire departments get when this happens...a lot of people don't know about it or aren't expecting it, and when those sonic booms go, it really sounds like something just blew up in the distance, or something heavy fell in your attic...it shakes the floor you're standing on!

Usually the flight path for landings takes the shuttle in over Texas and Louisiana, then out over the gulf of mexico, then over Tampa and Orlando and in to Kennedy. But due to winds and timing, this time the shuttle came up over the Caribbean, cut over Cuba and the Keys, over the Everglades, right over western Broward and Palm Beach counties.

A rare and cool event for us down here in Florida - but unfortunately a bust for those of you in Tampa/Orlando corridor that usually get to hear it.

You should have gotten it pretty good. I live in Boca, but work in Coral Springs...I felt and heard it clearly inside of a 2nd floor office with windows closed. I called my mother who lives in Boca and she felt it but had no idea what it was...she went outside and started looking around for a car accident or a smoke plume from an explosion!

Aww I can't believe I missed this!! I'm from Palm Beach County but I'm taking summer classes at UF. We didn't feel/hear anything in Gainesville!

Yeah, we missed it here in Central Fl. I was all ready - warned the kids - then turned on the TV and saw the tracking. :headache: The real bummer is that my dad just moved here and he was looking forward to it!
