South Beach Dieters......... Unite

FIRST WHOOOPEEE to all those big losers this week and for staying on plan when tempted by events and menus! :Pinkbounc

After a failed attempt in December to start SBD and stay with it (holidays just sunk me...I lost 11 pounds then gained about 8 of them back..) I started yesterday and today I was already down 3 pounds...I have 40 more pounds to go for goal.

A couple of questions...can you add spaghetti sauce back in after induction? what about corn on the cob? I'm trying to avoid potatoes but feel like I need corn or carrots. I did manage to avoid all of Sister Schubert's yeast rolls at dinner tonight...had sauteed chicken with mozzarella on top with salad. I was just looking at the spaghetti sauce jar and saw it had 19 g of carbs! I figured I should pass on it during induction...but wondered what y'all've found...ooh a new word y'all've !!! :)

Back and sticking to it this time...off to Lands End to find a cheap inspirational bathing suit...some are still on sale! :)

Congrats SPB999 Keep up the good work.

Tara; Spaghetti sauce - I would look for one with no added sugar (read the ingredients) or make your own.

Carrots - are a food to enjoy in starting in phase 2. Hold on a few days more.

Corn - Is not permitted in any stage.

Good luck on finding a swim suit.

I went went to the mall to do some walking (seriously). I walked by Old Navy and out of curiosity I look around. I actually bought a new down filled winter coat that had on clearance. It was marked from $68.00 to $17.00. I actually fit into close from Old Navy. My old one was a 4XL. This one is a plain XL. I never thought I could buy clothes from that type of store. I'm a guy who never liked shopping for clothes but it was fun to go to the mall and find stuff I could wear.

I did buy much because I'm still losing weight. Most of my shopping is at Goodwill. I hate to buy new clothes if I will shrink out of them in 6 months.

Tara - congrats on your loss so far !

johde - great buys you found and congrats on shrinking down all those sizes!

I'm almost out of phase 1.....I plan to add a couple of things back in slowly... bought some approved cereals today and some oranges since the thing I've missed most these two weeks are my cereal and OJ.......

This is my last day of Phase I of South Beach, and while my weight did not change as drastically as I had hoped (3.5 pounds), you can definitely see the difference. I have lost 4 inches around my waist and my hips! Size 12 here I come. princess:

Great news TXbelle !! Let the inches and your clothes be your guide!

I started phase 2 on Monday.....I've reintroduced cereal (I'm getting used to the All Bran) and it was great to taste an orange yesterday !! I'm still trying to be careful with the carbs and not load them on too fast ...don't know if that's necessary but I guess I'm just a little afraid of jeopardizing what I've done so far.....I'm on the brink of my first 10 lbs!

Congratulations to you both!!! I lost more inches than I did weight when I first started. But I remember him saying your waist will be the first to go!!!

Well, I have passed my year anniversary on the SBD. I am so happy to have found it. I have lost a total of 57 pounds gone from a 14 W to a size 2. I never thought I'd be a size 2. I'm off my heart pills and look better than I did in high school. I know that I won't look back now, I'm loving the way things are right now!!!

Sheree, you are just so FABOO that you take the (low-carb, sugar-free, whole-grain, protein-rich) cake!! What a fabulous year you've had, and not just for you -- I know how much you've inspired me to keep going, and who can tell how many others? Yay, Sheree!!

I'm noticing a theme lately -- people having noticable weight loss, dropping sizes, and rediscovering the fabulous joys of shopping for clothes in a smaller size. It's all about the shopping, isn't it? Keep on doin' what you're all doin', you strong-minded, committed, shrinking South Beachers, you!!

:sunny:

Great news Sheree !!! Thanks for sharing your story of the first year.....

I think it's about the shopping. Boy do I love to shop. Looking for clothes that I thought I'd never wear is so inspirational. I don't have anything big from before in my closet. Why, this way I can never go back. I must stay this way, and I'm finding it easier and easier to do everyday.

SBP999 - I know what you mean about starting back slooooow. When I first went to stage 2 (more like stage 1 1/2). I would have 1 serving of fruit or grain but not both in the same day. I am now up to about 2 or 3 servings of fruit and 1 of grain a day. Although I don't get the grain everyday. On the grains, I eat oatmeal maybe 3 days a week and have bread twice a week. Schwabels make a very south beach friendly light 100% whole wheat bread under their Country Hearth brand. It is thin sliced so 1 serving is 2 slices. It has only 8 net carbs in two slices and it 100% whole wheat so it's good carbs. I have found it very good for making the rare sandwich I eat. I think you are doing fine. Add things back slowly so you know how your body reacts.

Sheree' Congratulation on your one year anniversary.

Wow, found us on page 2!!! That's a first. How is everyone doing?? I hope no one is giving up or giving in. Stay strong and have a great week.

Well, I've survived adding whole wheat toast to my diet...I show a 2 pound gain but I also worked out for an hour on the treadmill and my thighs are killing me today so I know some of it's fluid...because my waist and all feels much smaller than it did 2 pounds down.

I'm excited about the oranges..I didn't know you could have those...I thought I would be limited to berries...I haven't had a good chance to review all the foods allowed on phase 2...but I am limiting myself to one carb a day like Johde said...either whole wheat toast or a fruit...hopefully one day I can have both in small portions...

A great benefit is my complexion has cleared up...it's not a T zone anymore...just normal and smooth! :) YEAH! Probably due to the right foods and water water water! :)

Would love to hear any typical menus in your day...seems I'm stuck in a grilled chicken salad, eggs/bacon menu....need help for variety! :)
Tara

Tara, congratulations!!!! My complexion has cleared up too. I never break out anymore. I mean never, not even during that time. You are doing so great. DOn't add to many in all in one day, and you will see a quicker weight loss.

Well I'm 10 lbs down 3 weeks in so I'm happy ! And some people have started to notice so that makes me feel good too!

Tara - probably the thing I've varied the most is the meat with my evening meal .....other than that it's been eggs (which grew old quick in Phase 1 :teeth: ) and now cereal in phase 2, with salads for lunch and meat and veggie at night (chicken, pork or fish and on those lazy nights a can of tuna mixed in with some hot vegetables and salad dressing!)

Great news on the complexion benefits ! Keep up the good work exercising too! I've been going to Curves 3-4 times a week and when the walkways become less icy I hope to start walking some again....

Have a great week!

STEAMED, I tell you!! I opened my newspaper this morning to find a snippet warning against low-carb diets, particularly South Beach! (It really shows how much research they put into this, doesn't it?)

Among other choice gems, the person quoted said 'With South Beach, the nutrition in the first 14 days comes only from meat, poultry, fish, and eggs. With this, french fries are allowed.' Whatever this maroon has been taking, I severely doubt it's legal.

I have been used to seeing Atkins unfairly maligned in the press since forever, but this just proves it -- these idiots don't bother doing actual research or fact-checking, they just parrot what they've read somewhere else and put on their smug face. I have completely had it. I've just fired off a dripping-with-sarcasm response, as well as a sharp letter to the editor about failing in their responsibility to provide their readers with accurate information, and I soon as I translate them both, I look forward to doing my personal best to puncture some thought-free egos.

Sorry to be so growly, but this makes me NUTS. :headache:

Thotfulspot. Unfortunately you've got to get used to it. Whenever I tell someone I'm going low carb the first thing they ask is "You're not on that Atkins thing are you?" The press seems to really focus their attention on the first two weeks of the diet as if that's the entire plan. I'll need to reread the book though and find where it says we can have french fries (I've have to admit I have had 10 or so french fries the past 5 month.) I think SBD might mention making Sweet Potato fries cooked in a healthy oil. I wonder if the author of the article is taking "liberties" with that.

If people ask me what SBD focuses on I tell them it focuses on normal quantities of meat (not these undersized USDA quantities or pigout quantities) and lots of vegetables. I can eat fruit when I want them. I can have bread and grain if I want them (as long as there good grains). My problem is I don't want these things. I need to make sure I get at least a few fruits a week and a few grains.

I remember reading about french fries in the SBD book in the context of eating potatoes. It was talking about how if you were going to have any baked potato it would be better to have a little butter or sour cream on it to slow the digestion of the sugar ....don't eat a plain baked potato. I think it was at that point it said it would be better to eat a few fries (with the oil to slow digestion) than to eat a plain baked potato......these aren't exact quotes but that's the gist of what he was saying

SPB999: After you mention it, I think you may be right. French Fries or potato chips were better than Baked Potato because the oils slowed digestion. Speaking of Baked Potatos, Yesterday evening, our Wednesday evening program had a baked potato bar for supper. I picked the smallest one they had and loaded it up with chili. I also had brocolli on the side and a big salad. Even picking the smallest one, I didn't finish it. It was the first potato I had had since before Christmas and it really didn't seem that special to me anymore. I decided to forgo the desert I normally have Wednesday evenings and didn't end up having any craving later.

wow Jeremy, I can't remember the last I had a potato. I don't miss them. Even the smell of fries doesn't tempt me anymore!!!!

Unfortunately Wednesday evening are the one meal I don't have control over. Being chairman of the board in charge of the Wednesday evening programming I feel I should go. I am also teaching one of the fouth and fifth graders right after dinner. Different groups in the church take turns providing the meal. Most of the time they have good choices and eating it no problem. Sometimes they don't. I try to listen through the grapevine for what they are serving and plan accordingly. For example, the week I found out they were having pancakes, I brought my own low carb pancake mix and grilled my own. But sometimes I just don't hear what is being served and I hate to be constantly asking the pastor if he knows. I figure that part of learning how to make this work in the real world. You don't always have the ability to plan your meals so you make your best choices and compensate for it later.
