Hi All,
My Husband and I attended the South African Wine event on 10/12/07. We were among the mad callers at 4am our time the first day of the festival events going on-sale. We were very excited to do this event. We had done PFTS in the past and had two scheduled this year. We expected big things and to be able to learn about a wine area we didn't know much about.
If you have ever done a PFTS it was in the same area and the same set up out side. We arrived 1/2 hour early to get our wrist bands and wait at the door. When you go in they hand you a glass.
For this event they didn't have special glasses for the event and didn't hand you a plate.
It was just a normal wine glass. Also, when you got into the 2nd holding area all the decor except for one sign was for PFTS the next night and you were not given anything to tell you about the wines or what was available.
Once you got in it looked like a smaller PFTS. Again most people could not tell you about the wine that was being poured and they had some literature on the wineries but not a lot of interaction. Most wines we tried we thought were ok but nothing stood out.
The food was a large buffet on the right side of the room. It wasn't spread out and I heard a lot of people complain on them running out of something. We had Durban Chicken (the same from the booths), a roast beef, cheeses and some hummus. All good, just maybe not what we were hoping. I think I wanted a little more Boma or Jiko influenced food.
The "roaring entertainment" was a jazz band that performed in the center of the room. The music was fun and enjoyable.
Over all we liked the event, we didn't LOVE it. We wish there was a little more interaction with the winemakers and the chefs, like at PFTS. We also wish they would have taken time to decorate accordingly rather then us have a sneak peek at the next nights event. Was it worth $75 a person? For us no but I am happy I went. It wouldn't stop me from trying something new! I just hope this will improve with time!
