Sounding off a bit......about work....sorry - it's long

I know this is awful, but it doesn't always pay to be honest. I had almost the same experience 13 years ago. I hadn't had a day off in 3 years and asked my Head if I could finish one hour early on the last day of term. My friend had agreed to cover my lesson and he still said no. From then on, I realised that having an 'unblemished' attendance record meant very little. Now, if I am feeling at ill, I don't drag myself in. Don't get me wrong - I still have very little time off, but that day taught me a valuable lesson.;)

I work for a local authority and we do not get paid time off for school closures or a sick child or a funeral (unless an immediate family member). Staff have to take it out of their leave or if they do not have any leave it will be unpaid.

For the example of the 30th birthday or the dead cat could you be sure this was not unpaid leave because we never really know for sure what someone says is true and what is actually true. I just cannot see this being agreed as paid leave. Also can you be sure the other staff were not asked to make the time up as you were asked but you may not have realised.

Hope you have a great holiday and don't let this spoil your well earned rest.

same here - i work for the local authority as well and its exactly the same. A colleague looked into it recently as her baby was ill and needed a day off and was told they would allow 2 days if the child was critical :confused3

Sounds very unfair BUT not knowing how well you get on are you sure she didn't just tick the box to cover her back? Saying you must make up the time and actually making you are two different things.

I get paid 30 hours a week but only work 27. It something agreed at branch level but if Head Office ask where I am on Fridays we just say "I made my time up during the week"

Just thought I'd ask as sometimes things are said/written to make it all look above board. :confused3

Hope you get it sorted and have a lovely holiday.:yay:
