the majority of our visits are done during late november and early december. ideally, when should my uy be?and why? thanks again for your suggestions and patience!

Use Year is simply the date each when your points are renewed. It will also determine your banking deadlines, but has no effect on making reservations.

In the event that would cancel a reservation a short while before, Use Year could play a role in your ability to reuse those points.

If you know you will always travel in November/December an October use Year should work well for you. If you cancelled a November trip in October- you'd have until September 30 of the following year to use or bank those points. If you had a December Use Year and cancelled a November reservation in October, you'd need to use those points by November 30 of the same year.

Keep in mind that you are talking about 36-48 more years of vacationing. What are the odds that you'll always vacation at the same time of year throughout the life of the DVC contract?

So what might make sense now might not be as important in several years.

As Doc said, UY doesn't have any affect on what time of year you can make reservations. It only comes into play if you cancel a trip.

An example of what can happen was posted earlier today. A member who has a June use year has a reservation for tomorrow and his wife is sick. So he would have to use those points by May 31. If he would have had an April use year, he would have had until March 31 of next year.

True, but other things being equal, why not choose a use year that you know will be convenient for the next several years?

We are in the same situation as OP, usually going in early December, and we chose an October use year which is perfect for us.

But one year we went immediately after Thanksgiving. Suppose our use year had been December. Then we would have had to borrow some of the points from the following use year (starting a few days later!). And we could not have banked the points from the current use year, so if we had to cancel they would have been lost. Or if we did bank them we would have had to borrow the banked points back -- can you do that? WHO NEEDS IT!

Just pick a use year that makes things as simple as possible.

We go a lot in the Fall and in January, so we have 2 contracts...one with a September and one with an October use Year.

That way, if something happens to one of our trips, we still have a fairly significant amountof time to re-book.

It has happened a couple of times...once when my DMIL was sick and once when my DFather needed eye surgery, so I was glad to have some time to play with as far as re-booking.

I would recommend trying to get an October or November UY.
