I am in school currently and would have a year left at the school I am at to finnish my associates degree. I really only have about 7 classes left, but due to them not being offered until spring that is why it takes an extra year.

I was thinking about transfeting to another school to get my bachelors now. You need 90 credits to get in. I will have enough by the end of summer quarter.

If I transfer I would not get an associates degree, I would just get a bachelors from the school I transfer to. I would complete my bachelors a year sooner by transfering, but would not get the associates degree from either school.

DH is also in school. If I wait we will get done about the same time, but if I go now I will get done a year before him and will be able to get a job to help while DH finnishes his schooling.

I just came up with this idea last week and have to make a decision by tomorrow. I talked with DH and I think he wants me to go now, but when I talked to my mom she was iffy and is worried about me not getting the associates. (Note: my parents give me no money for college, but watch the kids while I go) I just wondered what others would do if in the situation. Thanks in advance for your responses.:)

The only way you gain anything by getting the Associates is if you don't complete your bachelors. It also might help you get a job if you are in a situation that you have to get something before you complete your bachelors. If it's only a matter of time and not money it might be worth it. Not to mention it might be cheaper to go ahead and get the classes you need while at a junior college since tuition usually costs less....but that's really only if they will count towards your bachelors.

If you plan on getting your bachelors anyway then there is no need for an associates. I say go straight for the bachelors and save yourself a year of time! :thumbsup2

what are you going to school for?
unless the associates will get you a job ( think Nursing, PT assist, OT assist),
I would go now for the Bachelor's degree.

Bachelor's trumps Associates. It's a wise use of time to put the year towards the Bachelor's. You should go for it! :)

If waiting to get your Associates will delay your schooling for a year, then no, I would not try to complete my Associates.

As PP have said, your Associates is not worth what your Bachelors is worth

Transfer now for fall and get done a year sooner! Good luck!

That is not always true, I have an AS, BSW, MBA! I did it this way for a variety of reasons, money, time, geographic location! I will say this that having an AS, has only helped me and each graduation was an importment milestone in my life. Sorry about the poor grammer, typing with one hand, as I almost sliced the tip of my finger off earlier! I say go for it, but do what is best for you and your future career/profession goals.

Whether the Associates degree is important or not depends on your field of study. I do not have an AS or a BS, skipping both to get my MS. I do not think it hurt me, but that plan is not fir everyone, and definitely not for every field.

How does one get a Masters degree without having an undergraduate degree?

In the field I'm in an associates won't get you a job unless you have a BS in another field and just got the AS to change fields... Unless you want to use the associates to get a job while still in school for the BS I would just skip it.

First reaction is, go for the Bachelor's degree - IF you can get into a program. Like others have said, it depends on your field of study.

Thanks for the replies! I am going to school for.... no flames please......education. I am doing early elementary.

The only thing I feel I could gain is by having my associates I could be a daycare/childcare/preschool director. I can be an assistant director without the degree. I have no interest in teaching preschool/pre-k and was thinking about working as a director with my associates while I got my bachelors. I could be an assistant director without a degree (of course a degree looks better). When I am completed with my bachelors I can teach k-3 and reading through 12. That is they way it is set up at the school I am going to attend.

I have spoke with the college that I want to transfer to and they said I can get in. I have the grades and need to get three references which I can get, fill out the forms, etc.

Summer quarter starts Monday so I have to decide today, fill out my fasfa take it to the school and get my classes scheduled. All of the classes I need to take still have avalibility, since I got dropped for not paying, because I could not decide what to do, had financial aid and loan questions I got worked out, etc.

tomthebarncat - I hope your finger feels better soon.

Well, another consideration is not only if all the credits will transfer but also will all the course work transfer. Is the OP 100% certain that every class she has taken so far will count toward her BS, enabling her to get that degree in the timeline she indicates? Or will she need to take additional classes that might delay that degree?

I agree, the only way an Associates degree will be of value to you is IF you do not finish your Bachelor's degree. Go for it!

I ran into that very situation, when I transferred to pursue my BS only 38 credits in total transferred, and 6 of those were from the Disney College Program :lmao:

So as others have stated unless you are going to use your Associates it's not worth wasting the time....

I have my Associates in Hotel and Restaurant Management and my Bachelors in Cultural Anthropology/Business Management and I work for a Financial institution :rotfl: So clearly I am now working towards my Masters in Finance, so you also want to be smart about it, I majored in what I loved and wound up with a great job, but I was lucky considering my educational choices....

If it works out for you to transfer the credits you have earned and start on your BA or BS I would go for it....

Good Luck :thumbsup2

How does one get a Masters degree without having an undergraduate degree?

Wayyyyy back in the day, to get a Master's Degree in PT you could do what was called a "3+3" program. 3 years of undergraduate, and 3 years of graduate work. Of course, that was taking 15-20 hours a semester, or lots of summer courses. I got the undergrad requirements done - and thought I'd just finish the requirements for the Bachelor's Degree if I didn't get accepted into the program. (My DH says Idon't even have a diploma from HS, but that is false!):rotfl:

I did get accepted, so never got the BS, and I was supposed to take a computer course for the AS, but took a required science instead. So I actually got a Master's Degree without any other degree.

Now, one thing to think about, OP, is that if you want your Doctorate at some point, you might have to go back and get the missing courses. I will have to go back and get the one Lit course and 2 language courses if I want to get my Doctorate.

Check with your schools. I know at the community college I go to now they have a transfer agreement that if you get your associates first, you will enter the 4 year school at the junior level. If you transfer each class individually, you run the risk of some classes not transferring.
