2 weeks ago I basically lost my voice. I have since found most of it, but my throat still feels swollen....doesn't stop me from eating though;) My question is....when do you call the doctor? Do you just wait for it to come back or should it have already been back? I feel this was brought on by sinus issues, which have not fully gone away either. I am not one to go to the doctor, I am more likely to try to wait something out. I do still have my tonsils. I haven't ran a fever, atleast not one that I have noticed. I still have a cough, which is why I feel could be why my throat may still be swollen. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything. Could this just be something that may take another week or 2 to heal on its own?

Amanda, as one who avoids doctors a lot as well, I don't know what to tell you. I did manage to hurt my throat this summer though and after I gained my voice back it took about 3 weeks for it to feel better and "work right" again. Of course I defer to those who actually know more. I just hope you feel better soon!

never ever go to the Doctor unless your convinced death is around the cornor

You could damage your vocal cords if you're not careful. I'd go to the dr (as a last resort, of course;)).

Go to the doctor. I work with a girl who had this same problem. She finally went and it ended up being an ear infection that was so far inside, the doctor couldn't believe it. Her ear never even hurt.

Not a good thing....I have only had my voice back for about 1 week. I won't be able to give the orders at Thanksgiving;)

I occassionally feel some discomfort in my ears.

I just hate going to the doctor and being told, this is something that will just have to run its course.:(

Go to the doctor. If it doesn't clear up in about 10 days - 2 weeks on it's own you could have an infection and need antibiotics. Not worth the suffering . . .

Hope you get better soon.

I hope it doesn't take you that long to get your voice good again. I know I was able to talk, but it was 3 weeks before I could sing again (when I knew it was healed) so hopefully you'll be good for Thanksgiving orders ;)

And glad you have the appt. I hope it goes well for you :)

I have my voice back....for about a week now, but can't sing well. Instead of my throat feeling better it feels worse. I have drunk a lot of hot tea, taken sinus/cold otc and been on cough drops. This is getting old. The lady I spoke with from the Dr's office said they have been seeing a lot of this and that he will probably want to put me on an antibiotic. We shall see.

i have never understood doctor avoidance. two of my grandparents died because they didn't go see the doctor until it was too late. now i am certainly not saying that everyone who avoids the doctor will die from it, but it makes me so angry. people should take better care of themselves. the worst that can happen is the doctor will tell you there is nothing he can do. weigh this against your health.

Believe me I don't mind going to the dr....I go for all my regular checkups. I just want to make sure it is necessary. The ironic thing is that next year my insurance will change and I will have to pay more for visit plus and additional 10% of any test/shot/etc. that I receive. We are being told that this is because of rising health care cost and that we need to make better decisions in managing our health care, not having drs run test just to run them. I believe that individuals will do less 'maintenance' work since they are now having to pay more, even those who go only once a year.

my helath plan has an advice line staffed by nurses. i assume most health plans have something like this.

that way, you can get an opinion from someone who is trained on whether or not you need to come in.

for example, a week ago i had a rash on my leg. i didn't think it was that big of a deal, but it was anoying. i called the advice line. the nurse told me i should come in right away based on the symptoms and made me an appointment. other times, i have been told i can come in if i want to, but it is not necessary.

if you do not have access to some kind of advice line, after 2 weeks of illness, my personal opinion is that i would go to the doctor.

Good. I'm glad you're going. Let us know. You're probably going to be put on antibiotics, you'll start feeling better in no time, and then wonder why you waited so long to go;) That's what always happens to me anyway.

SHe went to the doctor and he said she should of came sooner..
He prescribed some antibiotics for her...:D

I'm glad she went, and don't be too mad at her sheppy. It's hard to know how bad is bad enough to see a doctor.
I've done the same thing figuring it will go away on it's own and hating to go to a doctor to be told that very thing.

Caity, not all insurances have that hotline. I've had some that do and some that don't.

Todd, I am glad that she went in and that she got the antibiotic. And don't be too upset... it sounds like it would have been hard to judge on that one... I would have waited that long too.

Not only did I get antibiotics....but also a flu shot, cough medicine and allergy medicine. Not feeling too hot today, but hope to feel better tomorrow. Thanks for all the concern. Shep is always hard on me about being sick....it doesn't help that I have been the one caring for 2 DDs as they ran fevers of 103. It has also been a bad allergy year for me. I am hoping for a healthier year next year.

believe-Always call the doc if you aren't feeling better in a week. Haven't you seen that commercial on TV where the mom is sick and dad sends the kids to school in shorts in a snowstorm? :)

Seriously, if it lasts more than a week just call. I too am hesitant to go, always hoping it will be better tomorrow. But I've learned to just call and see if I have the virus of the week.

Feel better soon............
