Anyone familiar with eczema? Does it cause eyelids to puff & be very sore?

I was diagnosed with eczema a few weeks ago, my facial skin had become very red & dry. I thought it was a very bad flareup of the rosacea I normally have but the dermatologist said it was eczema. He gave me medicine but by then it was pretty much better. That was about 3 weeks ago.

Now today I woke up & was so very tired and my one eyelid was puffy & sore. By tonight, both eyelids are puffy & sore & my face is very dry & sore. I haven't used any different detergents or soaps.

I did have some Brie cheese last night which I've only had 1 time before (Thanksgiving-and I'm not sure if that's when the last outbreak started) but I googled allergies and it didn't mention anything like this.

And why do all of the hand/face creams have some type of alcohol and sometimes some type of acid in them? They burn so. All I can find to use is petroleum jelly to moisturize my face.

I have bouts of eczema and I related them to the rash and dry skin. The puffiness and sore eyes are also a symptom of an allergic reaction but is not necessarily eczema.

Look for a very gentle hand/face creams - unfortunately those that are truly hypoallergenic are also expensive.

A small amount of baby oil or mineral oil in the bath water will relieve some of the dryness of your skin. Aveeno is a good line of hygiene products for dry skin and eczema as well.

Philosophy and Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals are both very good hygiene/make up lines that do not contain the ingredients that make my skin burn and scream.

If I think of anything else I'll come back and post again.

That sounds like a condition I have - I went to the eye doctor and was diagnosed with Blepharitis which is an inflammation of the eyelids. I was told it was a chronic condition.

What I was told to do for it was to wash my eye lids with baby shampoo about every other day. Just a gentle scrubbing seems to keep the problem away.

There are also eyelid scrubs available (with the eye car products). This come in individual packets - you open the packet and take out something that is kind of like a wet nap but it is for the eye - you gently wipe you eyelid with this and it also helps.

Once I started washing my eyelids every other day the problem has basically gone away, if I skip a few days it starts to come back.

I've always had super sensitive skin. And have always had big problems with my face and eyes. Anyways, I've been using the Aveeno lotion and it has REALLY helped me (Of course, I use it in conjunction with my prescription stuff, but, it's been the best combo I have ever had.)

When I was having more serious problems, I would do the oatmeal baths and really soak my face in the water. It really helps to soothe the skin.

Also, for the eyes, I've been using Opcon-A eye drops. With eye drops, don't be afraid to try different things. I have tried several prescription eye drops over the years and nothing worked as well as the Opcon-A for me.

My daughter has eczema that gets really severe sometimes. She almost always breaks out around her eyes during a flare-up. Her eyelids get scaly and red, and almost always swollen.

Her dermatologist gave her a different prescription for her face, because of the sensitive skin there. He also said the absolute best thing to use for moisturizing was petroleum jelly, and to use it immediately after a bath so it will trap the moisture in.

My mom gets eczema on her eyelids (not down by the lash but up higher in the area that you'd use eye shadow). She gets a separate cream for it that really takes care of it. A dermatologist should know what type of cream works well for the eyelid.

Also, I've been using petroleum jelly on my face since I was in my teens. I am 43 now. It's the only "moisturizer" that does not bother me and gets the job done!

i don't know myself, but i am a member of a forum called digital retreat, someone there is bound to know

I had the same thing happen to me recently, and I'm blaming it on my eye shadow (it's cheap and about 2 years old).

I got some great eye cream from Clinque, and stopped using that eye shadow, and I've been better ever since - weird!!!

Good luck with this - sore eyelids are very annoying!!!! :guilty:

You are supposed to throw eye shadow away every 6 months, I think.
I have hung onto my Bare Ess. too long and now I have a hint of eczema on my right eyelid.:headache:

I need to throw it all away and start anew. I might do that this weekend. I am going to hate it but it should be done. I usually use the "new year" to get rid of old creams, lotions, makeup, etc.....

So I recommend you throw away things that are "old" as well.

Also wanted to add something about contamination of your creams, lotions, makeup, etc...

Get rid of all your old stuff and ONLY use Q-Tips to apply your new meds, lotions, etc. Do not use fingers to apply anything.

My skin has gone crazy since I hit my 30s. My eye lids and behind one ear gets so red and bothered. I use lanolin (?) and it helps. Also this summer we joined a pool and some how it cleared up?

Thanks for the reminder of getting rid of old make-up.:headache: It has been a while since I got new. Hopefully that will help too.

That happens to me occasionally and I've discovered that I am allergic to some dyes in eyeshadow - anything in the purple family will make my eyes red, swollen, and sore. It took me years to figure this out becuase I was using the same brand of eyeshadow and it never occurred to me that it was the color that was causing the problem.
