Our family (DH & I and DD5 & DS9) will be going back up to Maine next week for 3 nights. We were there last year and enjoyed it so much that we are returning. We will be staying at Gorge's Grant (same place) and it's right on the trolley line so that's convenient. Last year we went to Fun Town Splash Town. What else can we do besides eat our weight in lobster? :)

Is it worth it to go up to Old Orchard Beach to walk around? What about Aquaboggon(sp?)? Saw that it was under new management and the water rides look cool. Is the Zoo in York worth it? We have one in our town we frequent.

Since we don't have a lot of time I'd like to pick a few good things. We will get to the beach and mini golf and walk the marginal way again.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Jill

* Go down to Short Sands in York and watch the kisses being made.

* Go on a whale watching trip (I don't know if the whales are up there then, but it would be fun to get out on the ocean).

* If it were just you and your DH, I would eat at Hurricanes.

* Go to Brown's Ice Cream out on the nubble light's point between Short Sands and Long Sands in York Beach. While you're there, watch the sun set at Nubble Light. It is spectacular because the light comes from behind you hitting the lighthouse with pinks lighting it up so beautifully.

I will think of some more, give me a minute.

I have been going to York Beach and Ogunquit for years and I have to tell you that I have not been to York's Animal Kingdom, but I am planning on going in a few weeks for the first time with my son just as something to do.

By the way antkim here at the DIS is an Ogunquit expert so she may have some thoughts for you too. There are also quite a few DIS'rs who live up there.

Thanks for the tips! :)

Where are all the Maineiacs??????????

Never been. I'm a Mainer. Ayuh.

But while your there, there's this exclusive shirt that I want......Jk :)

Stop in Kittery Trading post just for the heck of it!

OMG! While at the Hampton Beach area a wk or so ago a friend took us to Browns ice cream! Well I ordered a med choc chip cookie dough
It seems like it had the entire roll of cookie dough in it! There was hunks, not just little bits.

That same day we went to Shorts Sands beach for a few hours

DS & I went to Yorks Animal Kingdom one day while up there. It was just ok, kinda small. The day started out dreary so we were taking a ride anyways.

Ogunquit is one of my most favoritest places in the world! I enjoy going into Perkins Cove and taking a walk along the marginal walkway along the ocean. The shops in that area are all pretty neat and Barnacle Billy's is great for seafood.

I also agree with driving to York and going out to see Nubble Lighthouse. I could sit on the rocks there for hours, just people watching and watching the waves. You HAVE to go to Brown's Ice Cream shop up around the corner from the lighthouse for the bestest homemade ice cream - they do have good size portions so get lots of napkins!

Portsmouth, NH is about a 1/2 hour south of Oqunquit and it's a pretty neat little "city" with a nice downtown area with a lovely park-Prescott Park. On the way, you can stop in Kittery at the outlet shops and the Trading Post. There's also a really nice water park in Portsmouth - Water Country. I've been to lots of water parks and this was one of my favorites.

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun - whatever you do. Stop into one of the rest areas on the way up in NH or ME & pick up lots of brochures.

My husband and I visit Ogunquit every April and September. One of our favorite things to do is a Finest Kind Cruise. They are located right next to Barnicle Billy's on Perkins Cove. They have lobstering trips, sunset cruises, and our favorite, the Nubble Lighthouse Cruise. It is narrated for some of the cruise and takes about 90 minutes. At a certain point, they slow the boat, pass out bread, and the gulls swoop by on cue as you toss it overboard. Great fun for kids, and grown-ups, too. Enjoy! :)

Another vote for Short Sands and of course Browns-the chocolate oreo mousse is my favorite this year! You could always go up to Billys Chowder House in Wells- great food!
IMO the zoo is not worth going to- especially when we have Roger Williams and Southwicks close by.
At Short Sands the Fun O Rama and Goldenrod (taffy and penny candy) are great for kids!

A Maineiac here...about 20 miles north of Ogunquit...

York's Wild Kingdom is something we do once a year. The zoo is nice and well maintained. We skip the rides..they need work!

On York Beach, you have to stop and get some Goldenrod Salt Water Taffy ( you can watch them make the taffy) and walk the beach...it is very clean.

Kittery has some great outlet shopping.

My memories of Ogunquit in the summer......my mom, her friend, DB, me and friends would ride the trolley after walking Marginal Way. We would ride and ride and ride......begging to get off!! :)

Anyway, have a great time!

Make sure you have a nice......Maine Lobsta!

I am a Maineiac and proud of it. :D I miss Maine especially the ocean. You have to go to Browns and have some ice cream. It is some of the best stuff in the world.

Not really a big fan of Ogunquit- more of an Acadia National Park girl.... Southern Maine is just too crowded during the Summer.

My family has been going to York Beach for over 40 years. For the past 8 or so years we have been staying right on Nubble Point next to Fox's Lobster Pound. To get technical, the Nubble, Brown's and the Goldenrod are all in York Beach :p We just absolutely LOVE Maine and usually go the last week in Maine. This year we are going for a long weekend the end of September. For another awesome meal, try the Weathervane in Kittery. They serve you on paper plates but you get a huge amount of food!

Hope you have a great time.

If you like theatre, you can probably still get tickets to CATS at the Ogunquit playhouse. It's playing through the 14th of Aug.
