I am in the market for a new/updated camera, mainly due to the zoom features.

I am currently using a Canon Powershot SD700 IS, which I have loved, but I just feel that I would like something with more zoom power. I know I will have to go to a bigger camera, so I have been trying to do some research.

I have heard good things about the new Sony H7 or H9, but I don't know if I'm ready to give up what I know about Canon. I have also heard wonderful things about the Canon S3 IS and now they are coming out with the S5----------TOTAL CONFUSION!!!! :confused3

Any input on Sony vs. Canon with everyone's experience??

Thanks for any information.

I am no ecpert and pretty new to learning more about photoagraphy. But I would ALWAYS pick a Canon ove Sony. I had a Sony for 2 weeks and it was jsut horrid. It ook awful pictures. I was told it was jsut that camera, but it soured me. Then whe nI was looking at SLR's I did look at the Sony Alpha and it was a nice camera, and I almost bought it, but when looking of r opinions I read alot of unsure to negatvies about the Sony and pretty much all positives with Canon. I have been told over and over that Caonon and Nikon are superior to other brands. I know others like certain other brands and have absolutely no prolbems with them, but you are used to Caonon already, so I wouldn't switch, unless you are really unhappy with that brand.

the sony alpha was picked as camera of the year, so the negatives you read were unfounded..

Here's some reviews that might help:

Personally, I've preferred the Canon (both features and IQ) over the Sony. The newest Sony's (H9) got a bit more reach at the long end of the zoom, but I still think the Canon takes superior pics.

At the very least, the Canon takes a lighter touch with it's in-camera noise reduction which might result in noisier pictures, but they preserve more detail for a more powerful noise reduction software (like NoiseWare). The Sony's use very aggressive NR which leave high ISO pics blurry instead of noisy (not much of an improvement in my eyes).

One thing to remember is that the S5 has a large cost premium due to it being brand new, and has more high ISO noise due to more megapixels in the same-size sensor.

The same can probably be said for the Sony... unless there's some compelling feature that you just have to have on the new cameras (and more megapixels do not equal better picture quality!), I'd lean towards one of the older ones.

There are also other companies making good long-zoom cameras, like Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Kodak, etc.
