Here's the deal I have two co-workers that are selling their e-readers because they are upgrading or have extra (Nook), one has a Sony and the other Nook. I want to buy one for my DD12 since she's already been saying that's what she wants for Christmas - WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY???!!!!!

I am a proponent of Nook because I love the looks of it compared to Sony.
I didn't look too hard on Sony because I didn't like the way it looks or feels on my hand. But I think function wise they're very similar.

Sony I think the whole reading surface is a touchscreen while Nook is only touchscreen on the LCD area. Segregating the touchscreen area I hear helps a lot with reducing glare. But again this is just from what I've read.

If you could, ask to look at both items and see which ones you like the best. If you don't want to do that hop over to Best Buy since they have both models there. Nook is the only working model, Sony is only a demo device. At least that's how it was in the store in my area.

Read the Nook thread if you have a chance. It gives you some ideas on what people like/dislike about it.

I absolutely love mine :)

Do you know which version of the Sony it is? I have the pocket e-reader and while I really like it, its very basic. The Nook has a lot more features than mine does. If its one of the more advanced models of the Sony the features might be closer to the same.

I can't advocate for either since I have the Kindle. Surprised that's not in the running. DH and I both have one and LOVE it, plus Amazon just dropped the price. Something to consider...?

I looked at both last night at Best Buy. I hated the way the Sony felt in my hand. The Nook fit perfectly... I'm sure you can guess which one I bought :)

So far I love my Nook. Barnes and Noble has weekly classics every week this summer. I just downloaded 10 (Pride and Prejudice, Peter Pan, Treasure Island, etc).

Kindle can't touch the Nook, that is why.

As for the sony e-reader, it is not bad, but the feel is not that great vs the nook or the kindle.

I'm another Nook fan. I didn't care for how the Sony felt in my hand and the way it worked. But, you can't go wrong with either. :) Deneding on the Sony model, the nook may have more going for it.

I would recommend hitting Best Buy and checking them both out and do some reading on each of their features.

I'd go with the Nook, unless the seller is asking for a lot more money. Sony is a good reader and has been on the market for a number of years, but B&N/the Nook has greater options in children's books than say Borders or many other e-book retailers and it has the ability to download wirelessly but not all Sony's do. Also, only some versions of the Sony expandable memory but the Nook definitely does.

OTH - Depending upon the version, some Sony's have a touch screen and/or a bigger viewing screen than the Nook. Some of the Sony's have the ability to display text in landscape and will switch with the touch of a button which is a plus if using it for reading textbooks.

However; my biggest reason for recommending the Nook, Sony e-readers have been on the market for quite some time so the reader you are buying might be several years old, vs. the Nook which will definitely be less than 1 year old as they didn't start shipping them until Christmas.

HTH

I have a Nook that I love. I have never seen the Sony. I just wanted to say that my local library has a lot of good ebooks for teens, so make sure you check that out. Either the nook or Sony can be used for ebooks from the library. I wish my dd would want one for Christmas. I think she'd really like it but she says she will only read the real thing- a book.

I have both the Sony touch ereader and the Nook. Once I bought the Nook, I never went back to the Sony.

My answer really depends on what model of Sony Reader they are selling - and also what price.

I'm admittedly not the biggest nook fan but if the price was right I'd buy it.

The Sony has several different models and sizes. The Pocket reader (5") is a good little reader but I definitely wouldn't pay more than $100 for a used one. The Sony 505 (6") which is now out of production is a fabulous machine and sells like hotcakes on various websites. The Sony touch (6") gets mixed reviews because that touch screen over the eInk screen creates a glare problem. Some people don't mind it at all and some hate it. I'd suggest you check one out before buying it.

The Sony 700 or whatever it was called flopped and they quit making them pretty quick. I wouldn't recommend that one at all. The Sony Daily Edition is a 7" screen and pretty nice. It has wireless access and displays PDF files pretty well. I'd buy one of those if it was a good deal.

One thing that I have been comparing between all of the e-readers is the battery. The battery in the nook can be replaced by you. The others either cannot be replaced OR they have to be sent out to be replaced.

I really wouldn't worry much about the batteries Pixiemagic. Those lithium-ion batteries are rated to last between 3 to 5 years with normal use. Chances are that by 5 years you'll be buying a newer reader anyway.

I have one of the earliest produced K2-US that usually gets used at least an hour a day and I've had no degradation in battery life at all. I still get 7 days easily per battery charge if the wireless is off.

I love my Nook, my BF got a E Reader for Christmas and took it back and got the Kindle..she loves that as well..we also got a friend at work a Nook for a Bridal Shower gift..so nothing but praise here for the Nook.
