Sonic...are you supposed to tip the carhops?

I do if I have a dollar or two. Friend's daughter was working there and they lowered their pay to less than minimum wage because of tips.

we don't have a Sonic close by, so we don't go that much, only when traveling, so have been about 2x in the past and both times, I really just assumed you tip, so I tipped 20% of the bill.

as with all tipping....

if YOU think that the person doing the job has earned one then give it....and dont worry about what everyone else thinks.

If you give one and it is unexpected then I'm sure the person will be very grateful....and if they dont get one and usually do then maybe they should have done better serving you.

I do, I give them a dollar. But its not mandtory.

Sorry about that...did not know I was reopening a "fresh wound"...

Ack! Sorry, I actually hadn't read the whole thread. I remember seeing the thread posted recently because I went to a Sonic once and wondered the same thing. After reading the first couple posts, I didn't read anymore. I just remember it got long, so I figured it had a lot of info. I certainly didn't bring it up to make you feel bad. :flower3:

I always tip the carhops a buck or two. They seem appreciative.

From what I've gleaned, Sonic folks make a hourly wage, and not a "tip" wage as do regular waitresses...which would mean that you should not be expected to tip a Sonic person...but along those lines...if you do get service above and beyond...and want to show your appreciation...

I honestly never thought about tipping them until I read about it here, so I started noticing. My kids love Sonic, so we go a couple of times a month. I pay with a credit card, and there is no option to add a tip. :confused3 At a sit-down restaurant, I get a receipt with a line to add a tip, but I don't have this option at Sonic. Not at ours, anyway. YYMV.

The car hops never act put out, so I suppose they aren't expecting a tip. :confused3

Since their food sucks & they never can get an order right, I quit going altogether, but when I did go, I never felt like I had to tip the servers. They bring your food out & leave, it's not like they are doing anything to earn a tip. Bringing the food out is their job.
