Welcome to the September 2020 exercise thread! Inspired by the documentary Howard on Disney+, which is about lyricist Howard Ashman, this month we're going to take a look at the music from the animated films of the Disney Renaissance era, 1989-1999.

If you’re returning, we’re excited to have you back! If you’re new, welcome to the team! Here’s how it works:

Each person chooses a time goal and posts minutes towards that goal as they exercise. You can post daily or just catch up when you can. You decide what movement counts towards your goal - which can be a nice round total for the month, a specific number that means something to you, or a calculation based on a target number of minutes per day.

Since September has 30 days, here are some common conversions:

15 minutes/day = 450
20 minutes/day = 600
30 minutes/day = 900
45 minutes/day = 1350
1 hour/day = 1800

One of the special motivations of our Disney challenge is color changing! Page one will be updated with individual and team color changes as we make more and more progress.

10% - Be Our Guest Blue
25% - Out There Orange
50% - Prince Ali Purple
75% - Part of Your World Pink
90% - Reflection Red
100% - Go the Distance Green

We’re officially starting this challenge on September 1, but if you don’t find the thread until later in the month, you’re still welcome to join!! There's no better time than the present to start toward your goals! Just post your goal and I’ll add you to the list. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and to check out old threads to see what’s been going on.

Welcome to September!

The Disney Renaissance era began with the release of The Little Mermaid in 1989. Alan Menken composed the music and Howard Ashman the lyrics. The film won Academy Awards for best original score and best original song.

Trivia: Which song won best original song?

"Under the Sea"

In July 2019, "Under the Sea" reportedly ranked as the tenth most popular Disney song streamed on Spotify.

From IMDB trivia on The Little Mermaid:

"Previous to The Little Mermaid (1989), the songs for animated films were written beforehand. With this film, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman worked alongside directors John Musker and Ron Clements throughout the whole storyboarding process, in order to make the songs a more organic part of the film."

and

"Songwriting team Alan Menken and Howard Ashman were brought to the attention of Disney Animation Chair Jeffrey Katzenberg by longtime colleague (and future Dreamworks co-founder) David Geffen, who was producing the team's off-Broadway musical 'Little Shop of Horrors'."

One last look at the songs of The Little Mermaid . . .

A recent survey of Spotify playlists puts "Part of Your World" -- this month's Pink namesake -- at number 5 in the list of most popular Disney songs to listen to while driving ("Under the Sea" edged it out at No. 3).

Did you know, though, that the song was almost cut from the movie? Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted it out, but Howard Ashman stood firm. Here's an interesting article about "Part of Your World," including Jodi Benson's take on her performance.

And finally, here's an alternate performance, of a kind you don't see every day!
