I see on Ebay several auctions offering song of the south dvd. i wsn't aware that disney ever released any of these. does anyone have any info on these item, quality, legality??
all the ones you see are bootlegs, as the only official release was a japanese laserdisc and European VHS. All the DVDs you see are taken from the Japanese laserdisc. They are entirely watcheable, but the colors are faded and washed out. There are Japanese subtitles that cannot be turned off during the songs, but since this is really the only way to get the film, it is what it is. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
We purchased several copies of the "Song of South" DVD from someone that was selling them online. We gave them as presents. They were very good copies. The picture was clear and there were no subtitles. It was fun to have a copy to add to our Disney DVD Library.
Just an FYI.........the name of the movie does not come up when you click on the link to let Disney know you want the movie released. I put it next to my name.
We love it so much that just to be able to watch a high quality version of the movie, we purchased a laserdisc player and then we bought the movie on laserdisc on eBay for an amount that I'm ashamed to admit!
There also exists a laserdisk with no subtitles issued for the Hong Kong rental market and which is very rare. Probably some of the higher quality DVD's were bootlegged off of one of these.
Non-subtitled U.S. DVDs have also been made from the European VHS but often with significant loss of sharpness due to a required process called "PAL to NTSC" that happened to be poor for that batch of DVD's.
