Something That’s Keeping Me on the Sidelines (for now)

It appears that the DVC secondary market continues to tilt in the favor of buyers and I’m quite tempted to buy my first contract. However, one thing that’s keeping me on the sidelines at the point is the fact there isn’t an option to purchase an AP. The whole reason I’m looking into DVC is so I can take multiple trips per year but quite frankly without the availability of the AP I couldn’t possibly justify buying 21-28 days of tickets throughout the year. I know the lack of APs is temporary but I just can’t get over the fact that Disney suspended APs with no real direction as to when they will return.

If you buy resale, you do not qualify for the DVC AP discount.
APs should come back once the limit on crowd size and this nasty virus is under control.

I understand. But even without the discount APs are still more economical then 21 days of tickets.

I guess I don't understand the thought process? So if you can't go multiple times you will never go?

Either the math works or it does not work. Buying 100 vs 1000 vs 10000 points doesn't really change the math that much (direct is changed some on the new resorts) as the annual costs just increase with every point.

The strategy works hand in hand with having an AP...
for example: I’d like to have 2-3 Disney trips per year and be able to use the AP on each of those trips. Therefore, I’m combination with my DVC point usage it becomes more economical than paying for resort rooms for each stay.

So you seem to say if you can't go 2-3 times then you won't go at all. Is this what you are saying?

In that case APs will come back at some point. Now if you are buying direct for the AP discount then possibly that doesn't come back (although it's likely as well).

I’ll go but I’ll probably just take 1 trip per year until APs come back. Although now that I say that I suppose I could always bank the 2021 points I don’t use and then use those points in 2022... I think I see your train of thought and you make a valid point.

I think we will see APs back for sale by 2021 at the latest...or may even see them in a few weeks once they have finished dealing with all the refunds as people had to choose by August 11th.

This way, IMO, when they do resume sales, they can include the lack of park hopping and the need for a park reservation as part of the process.

Resale is taking about 3 months right now from start to finish. So, the first trip with it wouldnt be until early 2021, and most likely later based on what is still there for booking,

Just remember to consider the cost of a cash stay while you are waiting to buy as well as that can sometimes make it worthwhile to do sooner rather than later.

Good luck.

The last time we bought a regular AP we lived in Louisiana. Since we moved to Florida, we have purchased the weekday annual pass (it's about the least expensive). If we moved from Florida, I think we would sell our points and not go again. The first time we bought an AP, it was the one that covered all the parks, plus the water parks. I think we paid about $350 for adult and less for children. Now that same pass is about $1000 which is insane. The most expensive AP we bought while still not Florida residents was the first Gold Pass they offered a few years ago.

Our current weekday passes were supposed to expire on the last day of our Dec trip. Now with extensions we get another trip in Jan and one more in May for the same ticket. We only missed out on one trip last May. I could even see us selling our points after that May trip since park admission is so ridiculous these days.

Yea, tickets have shown no signs of stopping the crazy increase. It's definitely a major consideration on whether Disney is worth it every year. I literally could have gone to Europe for the cost of my last trip.

It’s taking several months resale to get points anyway, when I made an offer and accepted my contract back in April APs were still available. It’s not like APs won’t come back. Not being able to park hop takes away a huge benefit of them anyway, IMO. Personally, I wouldn’t let not being able to buy APs keep you from buying. If you’re buying resale you won’t be using your points for sometime anyway if the timeline remains the same. If you’re a FLR they have a good discount now on tickets.

An AP without a park hopping option...I hadn’t thought of this yet.
