My DH is on a diet and he is MISERABLE!!! On top of that he took today off since schools are closed. So here I am on what could have been a fun day with him and the kids and he is soooo cranky!

I know it is the diet because it started 2 weeks ago and that is when he started dieting. I swear I am beginning to think there is some chemical imbalance or something. I could cry. It is like walking on egg shells. I just want to take the kids and run. And he isnt depressed or anything.

Is this common with a diet? I forget the name of the diet but it is no carbs. And he does need to lose weight esp since we are going to Disney in less than 60 days. And yes he has done this diet before but not for a long time. I dont remember it being this bad before.

Is he doing Atkins? That can make you pretty grumpy for the first week but the headaches are usually gone by the 2nd week.

Have you tried pointing out his behaviour to him? My DH quit chewing tobacco and oh man was he crabby. Both DS's and I were avoiding him cause we never knew what might set him off. It was just irrational behaviour on his part. I finally just started walking away from him and/or telling him that he could talk to me when he could do it in a calm rational manner.

Maybe you could all go on a walk or bike ride together. He's get some exercise and maybe feel a little less grumpy.

Otherwise, sneak out with the kids and head to McDonald's for lunch. :rotfl2:

Yea, I'd be getting out of the house as often as possible until he stopped starving himself. Healthy eating should make you feel better, not worse. And I have no tolerance for some guy making me miserable in my own house.

I'm no help, I know.

Yes!! That is what it is called! Not sure how you can survive on meat and sugar free jello!

Ditto.

Then again, I am 45 and I just don't put up with the diet, work, or other excuse for the day for treating us like crap.

I don't mind listening to venting and other ailments but lashing out will get your head lobbed off from me. I have no tolerance in my 40's.:lmao:

And yes, when you eat healthy you feel SOOO much better. It sounds like he is on the wrong "diet" to be honest.

Get some activity going - raise the endorphins it will help his mood.

So should husbands have no tolerance one week each month?:confused3

No they shouldn't.

I guess everyone is different but I try to keep my grumpiness to myself. I may go sulk by myself, but I don't go seeking out the rest of the family to make them miserable too. I think that's fair.

And heck, all I was suggesting is that if the guy is so grouchy, just take a bunch of field trips. I personally wouldn't sit around and listen to it.

Some people's chemical blanace can really be upset by certain diets, and even though he's done this "diet" before, he's gotten older and his body may have changed.

I really don't believe in "diets", but changes in lifestyle. We tried the South Beach thing because of my DH's cholesterol, and I was SO sick on it! Instead, we just swapped to smaller portions, no fried stuff, meatless meals a few times a week and lot's of veg. It's not perfect and I still struggle with weight, but you need to find something that works with your body. good luck!

He's definitely detoxing from carbs and sugar. He'll be fine soon enough!

It is the diet. I've done it many times because it short circuits my migraines an IBD BUT because it mimics diabetic body chemstry it also causes the pretty extreme mood swings Diabetics experience. All this should be covered in your DH's book and they recommend adding more carbs if it gets too bad. I think they recommend nuts, I like PB on celery myself.

worse comes to worse spike his food with a bit of sugar:laughing: just kidding.

Thanks guys! I thought I was going crazy. Hopefully it goes away soon and if not, at least he is away on business next week! haha

Maybe that particular diet isn't right for him and he should consider trying another one. I've been on many diets that eliminate different foods or food groups. I just can't survive long-term feeling light-headed or deprived all the time. My DH and I have been doing Weight Watchers together for a little over 2 months. We can eat virtually anything we want, as long as it fits into our daily points allowance. We're getting our beloved carbs, just not in large quantities. We can make low points versions of almost anything we want. I've lost 21 lbs. and DH has lost more like 22.

If your DH is looking for a program he can follow in the long-term, Atkins probably isn't for him if he's that cranky already. Perhaps he should try a different approach.
