Is it confusing to dine with a mixed party--some people on the dining plan and some not? Or are the CMs pretty used to this and able to sort things out?

CMs are used to it. Tell them at the beginning of the meal, and then again right before they bring the check.

We did it for 7 dinners-4 on and 4 off. Didn't have one problem.

We were with a large group, some on the plan some not all in different rooms, no issues as long as you are clear who is on what plan.
