Gonna try to make this is short as I can...hopefully it works.. LOL
1st- DGM 80 years old fell 3 years ago while dancing with DGF in Florida (snow birds)....she had it fixed, developed infection...replaced that hip with a new one...this time a "mercer" infection (not sure if I spelled that right)....lost a lot of blood, had a transfusin...her blood is thin, systemic mastocytosis (??) blood given had not been thinned...caused abnormal heart etc...anyway- long story short, she's been back here in Vermot for 2 years, with only 1 hip...in a wheelchair, with small walking...transfering on her own etc.. but thats it.
Fast forward to this past Friday. DGM has spent the last 3 months going back and forth to DHMC with consults trying to decide if she should/could handle a surgery to put a new hip in...she had been suffering from depression, but Zoloft is helping that!...LOL...anyway- they decide to do so. and Friday afernoon/night she had surgery
What they ended up doing was putting in a 'bridge' as the tissue didnt look the best for the doctor...there was still some junk left from the infection and past surgeries...he cleaned it all up, and put in a bridge, which was loaded in antibiotic...this will stay for 6-12 weeks...depending on the next 5-7 days.
She was great friday/saturday/sunday...then Sunday night she woke up with a very high heart rate- 131-133...irregular...they used the paddles and shocked it...got it regular..they decided that since she has taken so much fluid via iv (she's retainig fluid really bad- puffy hands etc.) that her blood had gotten too thin...they gave her a slow drip transfusion...this was early am- about 2am....she was fine all day...about 3pm, it started again, but lowering her flow of IV fixed it....I saw her tonight at about 7pm,and she seemed good. Her puffyness has gone down a bit, but not that much....She didnt sleep well last night- obviously, and hasnt felt like eating much...just yogurt fluids etc. as nothing tastes well.
So...she'll be in ICU for quite sometime...Prayers and PD for both her and my DGF- at 82 years old, he's her primary care....he's able to stay at the hospital in the 'familiy center' but only for 3 days at a time..after that he has to sign up again, and it could be full....and only while she's in ICU....it's an hour drive to DHMC from here, so we'd prefer her to stay in ICU so he can stay there too...
Thanks everyone I'll update as I know more
Brandy
ps. I knew this wasnt going to be short!
