They're only mixed that most people liked or loved the movie and a small small percentage hated it.

I wouldn't call that very mixed.

Don't know where you're reading but some people really didn't care for it. I know for me it was just alright. It dragged in most places, was clearly an effort to drag out the series. Also I didn't really like Jack much in this movie. Quite frankly, this movie was on a level of Matrix 2 for me.

I guess some people who spent $10-$12 and 2.5 hrs with not much enjoyment to show for it might be bitter.

I loved the movie. I can see where people are coming from about plot etc...

I think the real action/story etc... will be in #3

Well I must have really low standards because I came away from both Resident Evil movies feeling like it was not a *complete and total* waste of $8. And I only spent $6 on a matinee for Pirates! I really loved it and, seeing as how it's the highest grossing opening day in history, I think I'm in good company.

BTW, anyone want to guess how many times I checked to make sure I didn't type "manatee" for "matinee?"

my 16 year old daughter HATED it.

Reviews collected on RottenTomatoes.com are only 52% positive...

a sample:

"Gone is much of the humor and originality of the first movie."

"This second film is pretty much all thrills, special effects and nonstop action -- but with virtually no cohesive or compelling story line."

-- Bill Zwecker, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
"Calling a summer movie 'action-packed' is supposed to be a compliment, but there's nothing so tedious as nonstop excitement."

-- Stephanie Zacharek, SALON.COM
B- "Mr. Verbinski is an extremely skilled traffic director."

-- Philip Wuntch, DALLAS MORNING NEWS
2/4 "Rum, monotony and the lash."

-- Stephen Whitty, NEWARK STAR-LEDGER
2/4 "It's often unclear what's going on, beyond a zillion dollars of splashy effects washing over the screen."

-- Bruce Westbrook, HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
3/4 "It's the triumphant rogue in Depp that keeps this pirate ship afloat and actually makes the third voyage (coming next summer) a trip worth booking."

-- Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
"This Disney movie isn't a follow-up to the first Pirates of the Caribbean so much as its empty-calorie clone."

-- Desson Thomson, WASHINGTON POST
2.5/4 "This chest is overfilled with exposition and physical comedy, without a doubloon's worth of the scary suspense that made the laughs in the first one such brilliant comic relief."

-- Kyle Smith, NEW YORK POST
2.5/4 "When you find out at the end that what you've just seen is merely the overture to yet another sequel, you can't help wondering what more can be extracted from this franchise. Gold, me hearties, more gold!"

-- Gene Seymour, NEWSDAY
2.5/5 "Although there are memorable bits and pieces, the new Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie with no particular interest in coherence, economy or feeling."

But you claim in a later post that people either liked it or loved it and that is what the mixed reviews were. I'm saying that ain't so as referenced by the website you linked to and what I have been seeing.

Well, I surely wouldn't call the reviews "very mixed" with a rating of 7.9/10 (POTC 1 got 8/10) at www.imdb.com

This is the middle part of a 3 part story. It's supposed to pick up where the 1st part left off and stop where the 3rd part begins. That's exactly what they delivered.
