Some HoJo Questions

I have read there is a smoking area at HoJo near building one. I am looking at booking at Premium Disney View room or a kids suite, so it will be in building one. I am just wondering if the smoking section is near these rooms and if it is, how far up does the smell whaft? We are balcony sitters/enjoyers, and love to spend time on the balcony watching the world go by (and the fireworks if they are on), but with bad breathing problems in the family, I really don't want to have smoke drifting up. I was going to request a top floor as we love the idea of the skylight window.
I just wondered if we should request a certain part of the building to avoid smoke if necessary or is it really not a problem in any part of building one at all?

Another question is about the rooms in the hall in building one. Are the elevators located at the end of the building or at the middle? I was going to request a room as close to the end of the hall as possible (or even an end room) but didn't know if there was only one end or if the lifts were in the middle so there are two possible ends.

Thanks :goodvibes

We stayed in a DL view room and didn't have any problem with smell, but I think we were on the top floor or next to top floor.

The elevator is in the middle of the building. Right after you walk into the building.

We were just there in a Premium view room (the 7th floor is the top floor, and it was VERY quiet) and we didn't notice any smoking at all. I am very sensitive to smoke due to asthma, and I always notice it if someone is smoking any where around me. So I think the smoking section must be far removed from there.

The only thing I wanted to tell you is that this was our second time staying in a Premium room at Hojos, and although there is a balcony--pretty much no one spends time on it because of the deafening highway noise. If you open your balcony door it is very loud--like you would have to shout to be heard and it would be very uncomfortable to hang out there. The view of the fireworks is great, though--so we just opened the curtains.

It is nothing like the balcony at the Grand Californian (which is a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the world go by).

  • The good things about Hojos was:
  • Entertainment rate (89.00 for premium room)
  • Quiet rooms (we heard no one in the rooms around us--no screaming kids at all)
  • Comfortable beds (not too soft like Candy Cane Inn--not too hard like Best Western Park Place Inn...just right)
  • Little store in lobby was well stocked and friendly clerks

Bad things:
  • Constant white noise of freeway
  • The walk down Harbor is depressing, loud (car and bus noise very loud), and not vacationish in the least. There was a homeless man in a wheel chair that was really sad--he sat passed out with bottle of boos in his hand each night as we walked by in the evening.

On our last trip we had the end 2 rooms (above where the smoking section is) on the 7th floor, Disney facing side & we did not notice any smoke at all. My daughter & myself have breathing issues as well. They have a property map on their website (under the "getting here" tab) which shows where the smoking section is. I am not sure if I am allowed to link to it here? And we love the skylight!!

And with the elevator...when you call to make your reservation I would suggest requesting a room either near or away from (not sure which you would prefer) it & they will make a notation on your reservation accordingly. I have done similar in the past & they knew exactly how to word it on my reservation. The staff there is very helpful!

Perfect thank you :goodvibes

Thanks for all of that info. We have very bad asthma and are really bothered by smoke and it only just popped into my head when I read something recently about a smoking area near building one and wondered about the smoke blowing in.

Thanks for the highway noise info too. I didn't think it was as bad on the non freeway side. We have always enjoyed views from the balcony, at GCH and AKL, BC, YC at WDW and in Hawaii, we love sitting or standing out and watching the world go by, but it seems like it may be a little noisy to do that there :sad1:

Thanks so much for that. I did have a look at the map on their website. I could see where the smoking area was and it seemed to be closer to the freeway side of building one than the DL side, but you never know, maps aren't always completely accurate and we just would hate it if we were out on the balcony watching the fireworks and smoke from below was whafting up to us. I'm glad to read about the skylight too, I know we would love that, we are early risers and like the sun coming in so I thought we many like that. I think we would request away from the elevator.

Thank you all for your great information :goodvibes

Hi Aussietravellers! The smoking area is located on the far side of building 1, most of our guests do not have a problem with the smell, but we can add a request on your reservation to be farthest from the smoking area. The elevators in this building are closer to the front end of the building, but not directly on the end (about 2 rooms from the end). When you make a reservation we can add any requests for you and while we cannot guarantee it, we try to accommodate all requests as best we can.

Hope this helps!

We have stayed in Bldg 1 in a Kids Suite right by the elevators and the smoking area, and were not bothered by either. We never heard the elevator the entire time during our vacation, although my little boy snuck on the elevator when he was right behind me, and I wasn't looking. A lady brought him down from the 5th floor about 10 min later. Scared me to death!

Thanks so much for your reply Kriss. I will make sure that I add the request when I book.

Thanks Midnightred, that's great to know!

Oh wow, how stressful with your DS hopping in the lift. That was so lovely of the lady to bring him to you, but what a frightening 10 minutes trying to find him :goodvibes
