Ok, here is my dilemma.

DS (16 at time of 2006 cruise, Jr in HS) is limited on his absent days at our HS, since they are on a 4x4 block schedule.

I REALLY want to book the August 19 2006 special cruise, but am afraid that week will be the start of school for us here in NC. So I have a quote in for July 22 06 special cruise.

My question is should I book the August cruise and wait and hopefully the date will be OK? I am worried if I wait and then have to change it in a year the cruise(July) will be booked and the cost will have gone up.

Is there anyone else out there going through this dilemma?
I just don't know what to do.

Try calling the school and see if you can get a semi-official schedule? It can't be that hard to project those dates.

book both and cancel the wrog date when you know the calendar. Put only 2 people in the room to reduce the deposit. There is plenty of time to add others (make sure you have a room that will hold 4 if that is what you will eventually need) before they have to cut off children etc. In other words don't wait until the last minute to add people b/c you might ot be able to. Another question to ask is what rate will you have to pay for additonal people added later, going rate or rate you booked at originally?

I thought North Carolina passed the law that school could not start before Aug 25. I thought they were rearranging the calendar starting Aug, 2005.

You may be fine for Aug, 2006. I'd call and be sure.

You could always book them both. And, pay the deposit on both -- cancel one later and move that $$ to the one you keep.

But, check on the Aug 25 thing. I think you'll be fine.

I called the school, they haven't even figured out the 05-06 calendar yet. Next school year begins the new law for starting school later. It can start anywhere between August 10 - 25. It is up to each school district to set their own start dates. They also have to be finished by June 10. At least that is what I was just told. (last year we went in May and they missed the last 3 days of school because it was extended by snow days)

Soooo, I went ahead and booked a cabin for July. The way the DH and I figure it, we have a cabin, we are going on a 7 day Magic and when we find out the firm calendar, we may look into changing it, depending on the cost and what cabins are available.

Thank you everyone for all you advice. I would love to sail with all the DIS'ers on the 19th, and still may do so.....lol

I am on that Aug 19, 2006. We all rebooked from DISers.. That stincks about school restarting so soon.
You can book both, like it was mentioned and then cancel one once you have the dates.. I would book now while the cabins are avail.. and the rates are low..
Maybe we will see you on board. I have 15 daughter and 11 yr old son... NOW... Daughter had a blast this past August at the STACK..

Curious about the school year law. What brought that on? Was the school year getting too long or too short there?
I know here in California, in the 30 years since I left school, the school year is 2 weeks longer now for my kids....but the number of instruction days is less.
We took 2 days for of Thanksgiving, now they take the whole week.
We took 2 weeks off for Christmas, they take 3 weeks now.
We took Lincoln and Washington's birthday off, now they take "President's week".
Most schools still take one week off for Easter, but some take 2.
No wonder test scores are down.

The kids must be in school 180 days. Here, in GA, we start the first week of August; end before Memorial day. Apparently, the whole push to start so early is to get the mid-term exams done for HS before Christmas break. I hate starting that early.

The move in some states is to start the last week in August and go into June to complete. They say it will bring $$$ in tourism dollars at the beach. Whatever the push, I like it.

Actually, I'd like to see us move to a year round calendar of 9 weeks on; 3 weeks off. I wish I had that option.
