I just got an email newsletter from Shades of Green and it had an interesting article in it:

"Shades of Green® on Walt Disney World® Resort is pleased to announce our “Salute to Our Veterans” Program, which is designed to give ALL military veterans, who have received an honorable discharge (verified by current DD-214), the opportunity to vacation at Shades of Green during the months of January and September. Find out more at www.shadesofgreenvets.org"

So in January and September they are making it available to all honorably discharged veterans even if you aren't retired, active duty, etc. I just thought some of you that aren't normally able to stay there might like to take advantage of it!

Awesome, thank you for the post. We were planning a trip to WDW in January and to be able to use SOG would be awesome. Does your newsletter give the rates for January for this type of veteran?
I guess I will need to call Disney for more information.
Thank you for all your help.

You may get more info directly from SoG instead of Disney.

I have not seen this offer yet, and it is not in the special section of the SoG site. So check it out thoroughly.

It isn't shown on their regular website yet. It was in an "e-newsletter" I get from them every now and then. There is a special website for it, as I posted in my OP.
I believe the price for a standard room in September was $111 and in January it went up to $119. I would suggest checking out the website - they have an availability calendar for those 2 months on there as well.

I also did a little research and found it announced on a couple other military websites:
http://www.army.mil/-news/2007/04/16/2690-shades-of-green-salutes-veterans/
and
http://www.emilitary.org/article.php?aid=10611

So I am sure it is legit. What I find odd is that those articles are dated mid-April (and so is the special website for it). I just wonder why they waited so long to put it in their newsletter and why it isn't mentioned on their website by now?

I just got the same newsletter and headed over here to post it. It's legit.

To anyone who is considering it I HIGHLY recommend giving it a try. You basically get a Deluxe Resort at a Values price. We just came back from 10 days there and LOVED it!!!

The rate depends on your rank. They do not have a specific rate up for veterans unless you are a disabled veteran and that is $103 for Sept and $111 for Jan.

My DH and I stayed at SOG for our disneymoon and loved it there. We had a great time and great service.

Another place to check out is the Armed Forces Vacation Club. We got a condo through RCI for $299 for 7 days. That was also wonderful. I'm betting that during Sept. and Jan. SOG will be pretty full.

Right now SOG has plenty of availability and might have to come up with some better specials to fill their rooms. Disney has been rolling out different promos like crazy with some pretty fabulous offers to get people to stay on site. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people that normally stay @ SOG have jumped shipped in Aug/Sep in favor of a Disney resort.
