I'm wondering if anyone ever put soda in their checked luggage? I'd like to take an 8-pack of 12oz bottles with me. I'd pack them 2 to a zip lock bag. Anyone have any experience with this?

Nope. I've put alcohol in my checked bag...wrapped in a towel, put into a ziplock Baggie, and wrapped with a towel again, and into a larger Baggie. But a carbonated beverage? Nope. Not going to risk something happening.
If it was something I really wanted and couldn't get in Florida, then I would be very tempted to just ship it.
Otherwise, I put in an order with Garden Grocer or just buy it at the resort.

Thanks. The carbonation and high elevation was my concern. I'll see if I can order through my staples account. Ships free :-)

Actually, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't drink soda, but have checked champagne many times with zero problems. Just package your sodas carefully.

We have packed cans of Ale 8(KY soft drink) in checked baggage with no problems. The only concern is packing too many will cause your luggage to go overweight.

I think the difference between wine etc and soda is a can or bottle is the glass bottle the wine is contained in. Although glass can shatter if hit hard enough, it take more force to actually accomplish that. A aluminum can or plastic bottle is shook enough and then dropped or have something dropped on it is likely to explode or leak. Other than the weight issue the chance of the cans bursting would make me not want to risk it

The OP said 12oz bottles, which I assume are plastic? If this is the case you should be fine. I have taken plastic bottles of soda on long haul flights from YYZ to London Gatwick and have never had a problem with them exploding or leaking.

So long as they are well wrapped so as not to get punctured by anything in your baggage I would go for it! The worst that could happen is that you need to do some laundry before you really start your holiday!:laundy:

Actually the worst that can happen is your bag leaks into other passengers bags and they have to deal with it. It may ruin items in their bags. Someone posted on here once that their bag was ruined by formula that had leaked all in it. And they had to buy clothes and wash their clothes when they arrived.

Has no one else ever dropped a bottle of soda that had been shaken up by a car ride and had it burst? or am I just the only klutz?

We do it all the time on the flight home. Usually purchase more than we use. Has never been an issue.

Have brought cans and aluminum bottles of beer home several times (can't waste beer ya know) so anything we have left over gets bagged up and packed.
TSA has open our case a few times to see what the 6,8,12 mysterious "cylinders" were (especially when they are the small 8oz cans - non standard size). I suspect all the wires and power blocks from my phone, tablet, camera and laptop chargers may have looked on the x-ray like the "cylinders" were wired ;)

While I am guilty myself of packing a bottle of white wine several years ago, wrapped in a towel, plastic bagged, then wrapped again....I won't do it again because of an incident which happened to me a few years ago as the result of someone else packing liquid in a checked bag. We arrived on a late afternoon flight at MCO, had yellow tagged our checked bags for delivery to our resort, so just got on ME and headed to our resort. We had dinner reservations, so checked in and freshened up a bit and left the room to make our reservations. We arrived back at room about 11:00 p.m. and DH's bag was there....not mine...but our phone was blinking with a message from Bell Services to call them when we arrived at room. Well........the bellman arrived at our door a few minutes later with my bag........completely ruined.......with someone's baby formula soaked thru it......the smell was awful and the stains were unbelievable. Fortunately, I learned years ago...after my bag sat in a bag cart on a snow wet runway in January.....to pack everything in plastic travel bags inside my bag so only the outside of the plastic travel bags were soaked and smelly. The bag itself was another story........Disney took full responsibility for the damages and sent a castmember shopping the next day to repurchase a similar bag to the one ruined. They said it must have happened on the bag truck coming from the airport since there was no indication at the airport of a problem. However, my bag wasn't the only one affected.......the person whose bag had the formula packed inside was ruined as were several others which were either below or next to the problem bag. I don't know if I was the only one who had all of my clothing packed within plastic inside the bag....if I had to venture a guess I would say most likely.....since I've sort of taken an informal poll amongst friends and relatives and not very many people pack in plastic inside their bag. So, valuable lesson here......don't pack liquid items in checked bags unless they are padded and wrapped extremely well....preferably don't pack them at all. Keep in mind......not only your belongings could be ruined but others also.

I've done it. But I only put a few bottles in each suitcase. And I triple bagged them, and then wrapped them in some of my clothes and placed them in the center of the suitcase.

You check those things?
On our way down I usually carry them with me just in case my checked bag goes missing. I'd hate to miss a photo opp or have no power to check my email etc while my bags were being found or have to go buy new stuff for permanently lost or damaged bag.
Usually check them on the way home, less weight to carry around in my backpack at the airport. Figure if something happened to them on the way home, I'd have time to deal with it without affecting my precious week of vacation time.
If we manage to get a direct flight (especially from a smaller airport), I will usually put this stuff in my checked bag since there's not much chance it's getting lost.

There is still a chance of it getting stolen. No way would I ever check electronics, or anything valuable.

It's just the chargers that I pack. Always keep the electronics with me, would never risk my camera or tablet in the checked luggage

The risk you take is the weight of an elephant on top of your suitcase. It's not elevation, but the entire plane load of suit cases weighting about 50 lbs, which do not stand side by side. They are tossed into the cart, go up the belt, thrown into the hull and wherever to stack. Unloading they are thrown back onto the end of a ramp for an agent to put on the belt, to throw in the luggage train back and thrown onto the baggage claim. Not a chance I would ever take. There are alternatives like garden grocer and other deliveries. I wouldn't recommend using the on site soda machines in the halls, they are $$$$.
