social security number

Again, if they have it, they ask for it.

I thought I would update since I posted on this thread earlier. I called yesterday to check if we were in the system. I had (as I posted earlier) never provided our SS# at any time even though I was told I would need to. The rep at MS asked for my address and telephone number to verify it was me. I asked about my SS# and the rep told me they use that for identification purposes, but if it is not provided they use other means for verification. Again I can only report our experience, but we were never required to provide our SS# with a resale purchase we paid for with cash.

Which really irritates me as to why so many businesses continually ask for SSN when in fact, they don't need them.
My new policy (as of 3 years ago) is to not provide it (unless it is something I know for a fact that they need). A few times they asked me what the number was (like in a doc office) and I ask why they need it and they think about it and say that they don't really need it.
