My 1st grade twins just got signed up for soccer. Problem is, one of them wears extra wide shoes. Any suggestions for where to find those? Also, any suggestions on where to get regular soccer shoes/cleats and shin gards for a decent price? I have no idea if they will stick with this or if the stuff will fit in the fall, so don't want to spend too much on it!

TIA!:goodvibes

Try soccer.com we have used them many times over the years. There is a discount card that you can apply for that never expires. It's worth it if you think our kids will play for many years as mine did.

Check your local soccer store or Dick's Sporting Goods. Dick's offers a soccer kit where you get the shoes, ball and shin guards for a reduced price. It is a good deal. I would recommend getting the shin guards with the ankle protection as they fit better and protect the ankle. You could also check epicsoccer.com but you kind of have to know the sizes, etc on that.

I hope they like playing and if worse comes to worse it is okay to let them wear regular tennis shoes. They will just not have the traction on wet grass as cleats will. Oh and Walmart also sells cleats.

Hi,

My daughter has a wide foot. It is hard to find cleats that run wide. She actually wears turf shoes (due to an injury) which would be an option. She wore the Ronaldinho model but I'm not sure if they still make them. I think Diadora's stuff runs wide. You will probably have to go to an actual soccer store and try some on.

I would find shoes first then try on some shinguards. My daugher hated the ones with ankle protection. Because her foot was so wide and thick from arch to top of foot the shinguards with ankle protection interfered with the fit of her shoe.

I would strongly recommend cleats or turf shoes vs. tennis shoes. I don't know how much you want to spend. You could probably find some for your child without the wide foot for $15-20. Better ones at a soccer store would start around $25-30 but be of much better quality. Don't assume a soccer store will have outrageous prices - ours are very reasonable.

You should be able to get shinguards at Target or Walmart. I think both of those places also have some soccer socks which they'll need for practice.

Good luck. It's a fun sport and easy for the kids to learn.

Please don't let your child play in tennis shoes. This causes injuries every year.

Regarding soccer shoes and getting the right size - you'll need to try them on. Do you have a Sportmart nearby? They carry a huge wall of soccer shoes, all brands and prices. My son's feet grew so fast, we needed shoes twice a year because they played a split season. We passed his barely used shoes down to children who could wear them, his wide foot often fit best in Addidas. Nike always seemed very narrow. I did buy one pair at a thrift store that were barely worn and fit well for $1.25, lol! Also, our school has a soccer shoe exchange - bring in your too small shoes and hope to take away shoes you can wear. The PTA sponsors it. We took in many pair but never found shoes big enough. He's wearing a size 13 now and is 14 years old. I agree about the ankle covering shin guards and try a mouth guard now because many kids reject them if they don't start out using one. Last advice, make soccer fun!!! Go out as a family and kick the ball around. Volunteer to assist the coach in some way so it becomes a whole family acitivity rather than performance anxiety.

Thanks for all of the replies! We stopped at Meijer after church for groceries and I decided to look at the soccer stuff. They had Addidas cleats for $17 and they fit! And the shin guards with the ankles did NOT. Thanks for telling me what to look for! :goodvibes Got shoes, shin guards, ball and a pair of socks for $30/kid. Not too bad!
