Was just going through the motions on YouTube and it appears that the ride has been updated? Say it ain't so! If the answer is a yes and I've identified the new one, I'm left feeling a little deflated :(

Updated since when? It's not the original film, but a new one beginning earlier this year. A lot of people a disappointed with the "new" show.

Last year. I saw it on the 2nd day it was open to the public. It felt a little bit odd since a lot of it was done with digital effects while the original one didn't use many special effects.

And the ending depends on where you see it. The original was of course about California, so it ended with Christmas fireworks at Disneyland. The new one has three different endings. The one shown in China ends up with fireworks over Shanghai, in California it's over Disneyland, and in Florida it's over EPCOT.

I saw the new version sitting in the side right section and was very bothered by the curved distortion on the tall images. I don't know if things look better sitting in the center section but the curved image of tall buildings was ridiculous from where we sat. I also did not feel like I was in the images like the original version. Something about the older one made me feel like I was riding down the stream, riding with the horseback riders, sticking my feet in the surf. None of that with the new one.

If you are talking about Soarin around the world as opposed to the original California, yeppers. I don't like the new one and as a matter of fact, unless it's a 5 min. wait and no longer, won't do it. The screen is distorted unless you are in the perfect spot, I don't feel as if I'm there like I did with the old one and miss the smell of oranges.

Gosh sorry I didn't notice someone else said last year plus how was I to know you would have even read the post that I said over a year? People don't look at every single post.
No problem. l read all posts. It's a "burr under my saddle" when people respond to posts that haven't read the whole thread.

Hm actually I did read that person's post but I must have skimmed over the quote and the first two words legit lol.
Yeah generally I read every post if its a couple of pages or less but I mean really take the FD or MNSSHP threads you're gonna read hundereds and hundreds of pages?

Well, I waded through the (then) 350+ page "Official Pandora: World of Avatar information thread" before our trip last June. Haven't kept up on it as much since returning, however.

I'm not as thrilled with the new version, but I'm originally from CA and if reminded me of home. The new version has a couple of neat scenes with a European castle and elephants.

What I don't like about the new one (besides the distortions), is it's just a bunch of random shots around the world. No sequence to them - you're flying through a cloud BOOM you're flying over the Matterhorn for a few seconds and back into the cloud, then you fly over the edge of glacier back into the cloud (again it only lasts a few seconds), followed by a castle in Europe, Sydney Harbor, Africa, China, Egypt, then you're in India for a quick (5 seconds maybe) swoop over the Taj Mahal, down to South America, then off to Paris.

And each sequence is basically: fly toward impressive view, up and over, then into the cloud.

If the trip around the world was logically put together, I might like it more.

We've done it once and we were sitting right in the center of the row. It looks great from there, but that was a big mistake allowing the distortion of the images at the far right/left of the theater. A big part of the attraction is the quality of the video and they didn't even get that right. I thought the new version was ok but DW loved it. We'll be seeing it again.:)

I know this isn't going to help everyone but we simply just ask to be seated in the center and let them know its no problem to wait one more ride to do so.
I've done this 3 times at WDW and 3 times at DCA. CM's had no problem with it.
Ya just gotta ask.
I do agree that the distortion sucks and should be fixed though.
Although at DCA the seats to the left and right were up a bit further than the center seats so I'm guessing that was an attempt to help it?

I don't know how you can fix it. It looks like they applied some sort of processing to give it some sort of impressive effect in the sweet spot, but with more extreme distortion on the edges. I don't think they modified anything other than the movie. I don't recall if the old version used film.

But we shouldn't have to ask for special seats.
