I'm always reminded of when Thomas Edison invented and demonstrated the first phonograph.

People would strain their ears to try to make out the faint scratchy voice
recording nearly indistinguishable from the overwhelming harsh mechanical noise of the tinfoil recording medium.
Add to that the inaccuracy and odd-sounding quality of the tinny and thin "voice"
when it COULD be heard.

Many who heard this at the time came away amazed... and said, "It was just like BEING there."

It wasn't.
