Soarin' Over The World - In HD

I would welcome a new video, and I've thought something a bit more diverse would be a good idea for some time now. For the half day I went to DL/DCA back in 2001, Soarin' was one of the few experiences I remembered doing. I was really surprised when I finally made my way back to WDW in 2008(?) that it was the same California video I had seen before. It seemed like they would have done a Florida one maybe, or perhaps do a California in Orlando and Florida in California. . .anything, really, but California in both. I'm just not sure the state of California (or any state, really) is so interesting as to appeal to everyone over and over again. I don't ride Soarin' because I love seeing the different parts of California; I ride Soarin' for the "flight" experience. A Soarin' Over the World would still give me the experience that keeps bringing me back for more and it could present more diversity and culture than just the landscapes of a single state. I think given the option that most people would choose "flying" around the world than just up and down the state of California.

Finally, I am amazed that some people are complaining about the rumor of a new movie. The same Soarin' presentation has been at DCA since 2001 and Epcot since 2005. As long as the new movie is as good as or better than the current movie, I would welcome a new movie.

I agree, I'm not sure why people are complaining. It's a fairly cheap refurb too. If they didn't want to change up the queue, adding a new film would probably require 0 downtime. They could even do the testing after the ride closes for the day. I've seen more threads of people asking to clean up the film, remove artifacts, etc. So this would do all that as well. Plus, Iger probably wants to be hitting a golf ball in the new film.

If there is enough guest feedback, Disney could probably bring it back and advertise it as riding the "Classic Soarin'" again for special events.

I would welcome a ride that isn't showing other parts of California, while I'm in California.

There are two domes in Epcot, if I´m not mistaken...

So why not doing the new one (over the world) AND showing the CA version in the other dome

Would be a nightmare-queue but then you can choose your flight

There are definitely print deterioration on the Epcot print that would be remedied by a restoration and a digital print.

Noticed that on our trip there last month. Also notice that you could see the seams between the segments of the screen now when the scene bright.

Regarding the comment that "HD" would provide lower resolution than the current film projection, please note that the IMAX Digital projection system that's currently installed at some theaters provides lower resolution than film-based IMAX, but it's likely that the Disney will use a future generation of IMAX technology.

To confuse things more, Soarin' Over California currently uses IMAX HD, a 48 fps (double the usual rate) film projection system, to achieve incredibly smooth motion. HD does not involve digital in this case.

A huge advantage of digital projection is that it does not suffer from dust, hairs, scratches, fading, and film degradation over time. The last time I saw Soarin' at Epcot, it looked awful. For this reason alone, I would like to see Disney switch Soarin' to digital.

I'm lost on the whole technology spiel, but do recognize that the quality of the film in Epcot is poor and needs to be upgraded. Seeing all the imperfections almost completely negates the goal of the ride.

I also agree with you that doing new films is kind of a no brainer. I know people want to hold on to what they grew up with or are used to, but really?

I think that in addition to the helicopter filming DCA, Disney should film all the parks and make a film about each park individually. They can show a film highlighting one park or use scenes from all the parks combined with more fly by scenes of major monuments and such. These could be combined ala star tours giving riders a "new" ride each time. And certain parks could be honored or highlighted as Disney saw fit during the year for anniversary's or what ever
