For several years my DH and I have been guests of my sister and BIL for a February week in a condo on Sanibel Island, FL. This year we decided to prolong our time in FL by first spending 4 nights at WDW. Here is a brief description of DH & I for my friends reading this review on the disboards: we are in our mid/late 60’s and I became newly enchanted with WDW when we took our two oldest grandchildren to WDW in May 2009. DH developed an inner ear problem in July 2010 but thank goodness it does not prevent him from enjoying our favorite attraction at WDW – Soarin’. This past October we both changed our eating habits to try to greatly reduce our servings of grains, gluten particularly, increase our consumption of vegetables, and limit processed foods and nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers & white potatoes.) This presents a challenge at most restaurants anywhere and sometimes I just toss the ideal away to indulge.
Although I loved our Arusha Savanna view room on Zebra Trail on a previous visit we decided to economize this time by booking a pool view room.

My apologies for the slow start, I'm trying to include a few photos; continuing...

Our 4 visits to deluxe accommodations in the past 3 years have all been with booked with a hefty discount and this time was no exception. IMHO there is just one drawback to a pool view room; it can be quite noisy until the pool closes at 10 pm. I was only distracted by this on the afternoon of our arrival. But if you have a light sleeper in your group who needs to nap during the day be forewarned. Some folks complain about the darkness of the rooms at AKL. The only place I would prefer better lighting from what they have is in the portion of the bathroom that contains the tub/shower and toilet. Until your eyes have a minute to adjust it is like being in a cave and even then I would still call it dim. I love the animals as much as I like anything else at WDW and I still saw plenty of them from the public viewing areas although nothing is quite the same as standing on your own balcony and getting close ups of a giraffe, zebra or whoever happens to be venturing near. Bus service to the parks still is the major drawback for a stay at Jambo House. Only once did we get on a bus nearly as soon as we reached the bus loading area. And there were only 5 other people on the bus, most likely because it was during dinner time and it had probably just dropped off guests at Kidani and Jambo. Our average wait time for a bus from Jambo House was 20 minutes and they arrived already mostly full. Having grey hair does come with perks and young men always stood to offer us seats which we gladly accepted.
Our arrival was on Monday afternoon and after unpacking our carry-on luggage we headed to the boardwalk via DHS to our favorite Disney restaurant: Flying Fish Cafe. Even though our wedding anniversary is in January we have celebrated it at WDW the past 3 years whether we travel in December or February. I provide our actual anniversary date where requested on the ADRs but most all of the TS restaurants we eat at wish us a happy anniversary and give us something special. Here 2 glasses of champagne and 2 Chefs Amuse (tiny cups of potato leek soup) were presented. I enjoyed my potato wrapped snapper while my DH had a cup of clam chowder and a dinner of scallops. We shared a side of asparagus grilled just right.

After dinner we lingered on the Boardwalk for a while before taking the leisurely boat ride back to the studios and caught the bus back to AKL.

This “critter lover” naturally had AK on the agenda for Tuesday. My must do attractions here are Kilimanjaro Safaris, Pangiani Trail, Festival of the Lion King, Maharaja Jungle Trek and the afternoon parade. After lunches of ribs, baked beans, coleslaw and a surprise of two cupcakes when our server spotted our Anniversary buttons at Flame Tree Barbeque (our favorite CS lunch location) we ventured along the pathway that takes you by the trunk of the Tree of Life. In addition to seeing the fantastic details of the animals carved there you can spot live kangaroo’s in a clearing off the other side of the path. We chose a viewing spot for the parade outside of Pizzafari towards the village of Harambe. This enabled us to have an easy exit to the parking lot to catch a bus to WL where we had some down time on their grounds before our dinner at Artist Point where the best soup in the world is available – the Smoky Portobello; yummy! Artist Point began a new menu today. If you have any questions I brought home a copy of it .I had the Cedar Planked Salmon and DH had the Buffalo Sirloin, both excellent dishes. Our complimentary champagne toast and their berry cobbler with sorbet, also complimentary, rounded off this fine meal.

EPCOT day was next on our agenda. I was thrilled to be able to ride Soarin’ 3 times! When we arrived the standby time was just 30 minutes so we decided to go through it. In reality it turned out to be 45 minutes. About 20 minutes after we got into line an announcement was made that the standby time had been revised to 70 minutes for those persons just entering the line and some folks left the line which helped move us further forward. We met a real nice couple in line and our wait passed pleasantly. On our way out we got our first set of fast passes for the day. We made it to Le Cellier with 5 minutes to spare before our 11:30 am lunch ADR.

This is one place where I knew going in that I would disregard my avoidance of gluten to indulge in pretzel bread. I don’t have celiac disease but have found that I’m one of those persons with osteo-arthritis who reacts to the inflammatory properties of gluten. Fortunately, in the warmth of FL my arthritis barely gave me a problem. We each ordered a cup of the cheese soup, a petite filet and shared a side of brussel sprouts. Except for the salt overload from this meal it was great. We spent a few hours in World Showcase where I finally got to see the sweet Japanese lady who demonstrates making the taffy like animal lollipops. She is fascinating and interacts so wonderfully with the children.

We came upon the American pavilion just as the fife and drum corps was finishing so we went in to hear the Voices of Liberty. As we passed into the lobby a CM noticed our buttons, asked our names and said there is a phone call for you. My poor husband was confused but I knew what was going on. We picked up the phone receiver and dialed 3 or 4 digits as directed. We reached Mickey and Minnie Mouse singing “Happy Anniversary to You” to us; our little magical moment. Once inside the rotunda to hear the singers we took a place on the floor around the circle where they stand to perform. (At the time I sat down I did not know how I would ever manage to get back up.) The male singer who had the lead in “Oh Susanna” singled me out to sing that to (I’m sure someone is chosen for every show) and had me blushing. The really fantastic thing he did was at the end of their performance when he came over to us and offered his assistance to pull me back up to a standing position; offer gratefully accepted! My one purchased snack on this trip was the vanilla caramel I purchased in Germany. I took little bites of it through the rest of the day, finishing it shortly before Illuminations. When we got back over to use our FP on Soarin’ we first picked up another set of FPs to use between dinner and Illuminations; that is how we managed to ride 3 times in one day. We had our dinner at Coral Reef where I was pleased to learn that although no vegetable sides are listed on the menu both broccoli and green beans are available. I selected the Mahi Mahi as my entrée while DH chose the Teriyaki Salmon. He continued his comparison of Black Russian’s of WDW (Flying Fish, Artist Point and Coral Reef all did quite well.) I ordered a frozen strawberry daiquiri and although it tasted yummy I’m pretty sure it was a virgin one which was not what I had hoped for. We’ve always lucked out and been seated beside the tank on our previous meals here but this time we were in the second tier. No complaints though, we’ve had more than our fair share of aquarium side seating. When our waiter asked if we saved room for dessert I replied “no, but I do really do love your chocolate wave.” When he brought our check he also delivered a complimentary anniversary dessert; a chocolate wave in a “to go” box. We ate it while it was still warm just outside the restaurant! DH had developed a blister on the bottom of his foot that day so after we rode Soarin’ for our final time he headed back to AKL while I stayed to view Illuminations.

I found a place along the fence for a front row viewing position that was in a different area than my previous times and saw lower details of the show that I had never noticed before. After the finale I really “booked it” keeping up with all but the hardiest who were actually sprinting towards the exit gates. I was proud of myself for making it onto the first bus back to AKL and getting on while only about ¾ of the seats were filled. As I caught my breath I wondered how much over my target heart rate I had gone. Of course the bus did not depart until every bit of standing room was completely filled in.

On our third full day we finally made it to MK but not until after a late breakfast at Kona Café in the Polynesian Resort. Although we took the train around in the MK to hopefully see how the Fantasyland expansion was coming along due to the screening we could not see much other than the artist’s drawings on the canvas near the former Tunetown. I expected to encounter crowds this day and we had them! Formula known to all disboarders is: Early. EMH + MSEP = crowded day in MK.

Since we mostly people watched and viewed the shows and parades this did not adversely affect us. I discovered that, IMHO, Country Bear Jamboree is as tiring as I remembered it from years before but now seemed a bit more ragged and surprisingly I enjoyed the silly birds of the Tiki Hut. We confirmed that the Hall of Presidents is still a good place for a rest in the middle of a day. We ate an early dinner at the Plaza Restaurant but not as early as our ADR time. I’ve previously read of people having a long wait beyond their ADR time at the Plaza but until this trip that had not happened to us. We were also disappointed in our Reuben sandwiches which we previously enjoyed. But the ice cream sundaes are still delicious and with the Ice Cream Parlor still closed for refurbishment I’m glad we got to indulge here. As soon as folks began camping out in their curbside positions for the parades and fireworks we claimed our spots. We’ve learned to select a place beside a trash can because then at least one side is protected from people trying to squeeze their way in. It was amazing how many people tried sitting on the few inches of curb between the trash can and the street; one pair of teenagers attempted this repeatedly. Of course sitting or standing there is not allowed so they kept being told to leave. We ended up with family members of someone performing in a high school marching band behind us so we let them in front of us for that parade and when my husband heard that their younger son who was with them viewing had never seen MSEP before he let the boy sit on the curb in his spot while he stood behind. The next day as we were having our lunch at Mara we learned that they were also staying at AKL and they thanked us again. Although this had been our only day with some threatening clouds and a slight sprinkle flying conditions were fine for Tinkerbelle and we saw her fly from the castle to a point beyond us (we weren’t far from the Plaza Restaurant.) What a nice surprise we had at the end of the fireworks when everyone in our area wishing to exit was directed through a backstage area to reach the park exits. Once again we made it onto the first bus back to AKL from a park after fireworks.

Since we were not leaving WDW until after dinner on Friday I had asked for a late check-out and my request was granted. We would not need to vacate our room until 1 pm. Shortly before 1 pm we checked our main luggage into the luggage room. When our rental car was delivered that afternoon it was simple for my DH to load up the luggage and park the car in the parking lot while he gave me the freedom to go on the culinary tour. Despite having 1 day remaining on our park tickets we declared a day of leisure and spent it at Jambo House eating both breakfast and lunch at Mara and dinner at Jiko. At the Mara counter we were able to order just eggs and bacon without being charged for one of the combinations that included the unwanted potatoes or biscuits. We also selected whole oranges as we had been doing the previous 3 days to go along with our yogurts. We had always gotten them the night before and had them ready in our room refrigerator. After breakfast I packed up, putting all that we would need for 1 overnight stop on our drive further south into 1 carry-on bag and the remainder of our things into our other luggage. Following lunch (I enjoyed the Mara house salad with chicken) I considered abandoning my DH (still walking with pain from the blister) to walk over to Kidani Village. But I decided not go so that discovery still awaits a future trip. The majority of my photos of the animals on Arusha Savanna were taken that afternoon including all of the following:

Our final Disney meal of this trip was dinner at Jiko. Although there were several salads that tempted me on the menu I inquired about the possibility of a side of vegetables and learned from our waiter that we could order their house vegetable which consists of sugar snap peas, edamame, spinach, cherry tomatoes, carrots and probably something else I forget. They were very colorful and cooked just right. DH and I both ordered the filet but I have to say that Le Cellier served a better filet this week. Our anniversary surprise came at dessert time. Jiko presented an Anniversary card signed by our waiter and others. And then the tasty ending was brought to the table, a complimentary parsnip crème brulee and 2 tiny Tanzanian chocolates (cookie texture, not candy.) Now I know that a dessert that begins with the word parsnip sounds rather scary but it was fabulous! I’d describe it as a rather sweet, pleasantly spiced very creamy warm pumpkin pie filling.

After dinner we bid adieu to AKL and WDW and headed south towards Sanibel Island where we would spend the following week. God blessed us with warm Florida sunshine or scattered clouds (plus a couple of minor sprinkles) for our entire 12 days. The last few years when we’ve spent that same February week on Sanibel I’ve had to wear either a fleece jacket or sweatshirt for morning walks on the beach and found it necessary to wear jeans. This time I only needed the fleece (along with an outer shell) for our travel from and back to Michigan.

Lovely pics and it sounds like you had a great time! Thanks for sharing!

I just read your trip report. I hope the second half of your vacation was as great as the first half.

Yes, the second half was great too but I didn't take nearly as many pictures. The condo on Sanibel Island is right on the Gulf with only a semi-private boardwalk through the mangroves separating it from the sand. There's lots to see while enjoying a walk on the beach. This mild weather year was the only time that I did not add to my vast seashell collection. A few storms make for better shell collecting. And no waiting for a bus to go other places! Just get into the car for a short drive. :beach:

Thanks for sharing, that was a lovely read :) we just got back from our birthday trip, and the CMs really pay attention to the buttons. Makes the trip that much more magical.

We like the same rides and places to eat (and we're in the same age group lol) so I really enjoyed your report!

Great report! Thanks for all the wonderful pictures! :)
