I have not seen a thread about this - We were in WDW for 10 days in August and rode Soarin' several times - both sides. Both films looked like new - no dust or clutter at all. My wife and boys all noticed the same thing. :goodvibes

I'm so happy to hear that. I enjoyed the ride, but thought the film looked pretty rough back in 2010. I felt it would have been a lot more immersive if I wasn't distracted by the dust and squigglies on the film. I'll get to see it in 68 days.

Awesome - will be there in 6 weeks - cannot wait!!!

My DW was in Epcot today and went on Soarin' and said the black dust/dots were still in the film that she saw.

Yep, I saw them plain as day this weekend. Sorry to be a downer.

The dust and scratches are unavoidable on a film that is run that many times per day. As I understand it they do replace the film every so often, but it would start to wear again in no time with that kind of use.

They are supposed to switch to digital soon-ish, but I have not heard a specific date.

1) So, what is wrong with going digital.
2) Even proverbial drive-ins MUST convert this year.

The are converting to Digital, I just don't know when. My point was, even if they recently replaced the film (big IF), and someone saw a pristine version, it would not be long before it showed signs of wear. How many times per day must they run that thing?

A ton obviously--something on the order of 60-70 times or so (in each theatre) I would estimate.

I assume they will eventually go digital at some point, and perhaps change the scenery altogether. But I've heard nothing credible that it definitely is happening.

Cool! I take it they switched to digital. Hopefully the new digital projector matches the quality of the original film projector

There are about 90 performances per theater for Soarin' each day.

Performances are on an approximate 8 minute headway, or 15 shows per two hours. Times 6 for a typical day 9 AM to 9 PM (12 hours) equals 90 shows.

I suppose that the film can be changed at any time and additional copies are kept on hand.

If the projector is dirty, even a new film will show dirt marks and specks.

Compared with 3 to 5 shows (and film run-throughs) of a full length movie per day in a regular theater.

Eight minutes between shows seems optimistic, but I'll believe you. I figured more like 10 minutes.

Rode it twice yesterday and there were a few squiggles and specks, especially in the beginning. I understand they are going with it next year.
