Tonight I'm going to make German Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage and the Sweet Potatoes with brown sugar. Wednesday I'll make chocolate pudding pie and DH will make stuffed mushrooms and mashed potato with mozzarella and bread crumbs pan. We're bringing this to inlaws.
I love TG it's all about family and food and NO presents :)

Well I've sorta started, chicken is thawing for the dressing and I've done some of my baking (made a lemon pie, cheesecake brownie bites, orange -n- creme cake, and cookies today. Tomorrow will be the big cooking day, getting things ready for Thursday, glad to know I'm not the only one who starts early!

I'm going to do the jello salad today and the pumpkin and sugar-free chocolate peanut butter pies tomorrow.

The turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn casserole, and green bean casserole all get done on Thurs. Luckily they're all very easy to throw together.

Cheesecake is in the oven! Tonight I'll be baking pumpkin cookies and tomorrow a pumpkin pie. Tomorrow I'll also do all the prep work that I can to make things easier Thursday. I can't wait - I love Thanksgiving! :)

So far I made 2 kinds of cranberry sauce (whole and jellied), cranberry pie, 2 kinds of cucumber salad (dill and miso), boiled eggs for devilled eggs, and cubed and dried bread for stuffing.

I'm exhausted and my house is a mess. I still have to clean tomorrow.

I come from a small family, me, DH, sister, mom and dad. With all that said, I would love to be cooking some of the delicious treats ya'll are making. But I'm afraid my family is just too darn traditional...:rotfl: As I've been telling many of my girlfriends, I think I'll have 12 children so that some day I can have a big feast of a thanksgiving some year down the road. Either that or I'll just drop by random houses and give them the food I've made...

I am making my own turkey this year so DH and I will have our own leftovers. I made the brine last night and the turkey is defrosting right now! I'm also making a "healthier" stuffing and a "low-fat" pumpkin pie for the first time. YUM!

Punkin, you wouldn't like to share your cucumber sald recipes would you? Love them, but have never made them.

Not yet, I'm only making sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. I'll just make both on Tgiving day before we go to DBF's parents. :)
OP would you mind sharing your sweet potatoes with brown sugar recipe? I don't like traditional sweet potatoes so I'm trying something different this year, was curious to see how you do yours. :)
I think I might also take a pear/apple crisp, they only asked for 2 desserts to be brought and there will be 12 people. Whatever doesn't get eaten we will bring home with us so it will get eaten. LOL

I hate to admit it...almost, but we've already made it all and been eating it for a couple of days. Started a new tradition where we make our own, with the not quite as traditional side dishes, so we can enjoy our own thanksgiving before heading to do the big deal with the rest of the family.

I am starting tomorrow. It's just me and DH, so I get no help, and we still want a little of everything, so I am going to do as much as I can tomorrow, so I have to do as little as possible on Thursday. So tomorrow I am going to make:

Apple & Pumpkin Pie
Ambrosia Salad
Deviled Eggs
Cut up carrots and potatoes
Stuffing - I have a homemade recipe that is a 2-day affair, so I have to do the first part tomorrow.

I host Thanksgiving every year (this year I'm having 18 people). I do get help though: my mom makes the stuffing and mashed potato casserole. My SIL brings the pies and an appetizer. My other SIL is brings an appetizer. So I provide the the turkey (15lb) and a turkey breast, appetizers, cranberry side dish, rolls, and sweet potatoe casserole. But today I made the gravy. I make the gravy ahead of time then add turkey drippings to it. It takes a couple of hours to make, but soooo tasty. I also did some cleaning. Tomorrow I will make a couple appetizers and the sweet potato casserole, set the tables and finish cleaning.

tonight, I'm getting the turkey all settled in the brine until Thursday. I'm also going to make cranberry sauce and maybe boil the eggs for deviled eggs. I'll wait until tomorrow night or Thursday to assemble.

Tomorrow, I'll make apple pies, assemble the sweet potato souffle and green bean casserole, and macaroni and cheese....or maybe I'll do that tonight.

That leaves the turkey, mashed potatoes, veggies, and assorted whatnot for Thursday. My Mom makes the stuffing ( I have no idea why ) and my sister shows up with dinner rolls, beverages, and pumpkin pie.

I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year and doing all the cooking. (My Mom is recovering from some surgery) I decided to cook a lot, and then I won't cook all weekend.

So far today I have made; collard greens, bourbon cranberry sauce,YUM! have the turkey in the brine, baked a German Apple Cake, made two batches of potato rolls dough that are rising on the counter, boiled off turkey stock for gravy from the neck and have the Virginia Country Ham (MY favorite!!) simmering on the stove. You have to do that before baking or your mouth will turn inside out from the salt. :)

Tomorrow I will prep the oyster dressing, the cornbread stuffing, cook the sweet potatoes in brown sugar and butter, prep the broccoli, bake a chocolate pie, pumpkin pie and pecan pie. Hopefully my DDs will cooperate and help their Mom!

I love Thanksgiving. It's a lot of work, but I love all my family around me. :lovestruc

I have boiled the sweet potatoes so they are ready to go, the turkey is almost done thawing and I made the biscuits for my mom to make her dressing with. She is supposed to come over tomorrow to make it. I am also making cornbread casserole and my sis is doing mac and cheese and broccoli casserole. I can't wait to sit down and eat all the yummy food!

I haven't started cooking anything yet. I've a 21 lb. turkey in the fridge. My mom and MIL are each bringing a pie and sidedish. I'll make turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and an appetizer on Thursday. Tomorrow I have to clean my house.:laundy:

Turkey is settling in the brine...cleaned the house today and tomorrow have to pick up a few missing ingredients...so not quite cooking yet but getting there!

Punkin, you wouldn't like to share your cucumber sald recipes would you? Love them, but have never made them.

I can't do exact recipes because I eyeball everything, but I will give you the ingredients.

1) small cucumbers very thinly sliced (I like Kirbies, but you can use regular or english)
very thinly sliced onions (I like to use one small onion)

MARINADE:

vinegar
sugar
dill (it must be fresh dill)
salt
pepper

In small bowl, mix vinegar, sugar, dill weed, salt and pepper. Whisk with fork until blended. Pour over onions and cucumbers. Turn with spatula to coat all pieces. Marinate 1 hour or more. It will sit for several days.

2) cucumbers (very thinly sliced)
grated carrot (I used one)

Salad Dressing:
Mayonnaise (I use very little, maybe a tablespoon)
Soy sauce
grated ginger
grated garlic
sugar (just a little)
rice vinegar (you can use regular, but I like rice better in this)
miso paste (I prefer shiro, but anything works)

Mix the salad dressing ingredients well. I usually add a few spoons of water for a thinner consistency as well. Pour over carrots and cucumbers. Turn with spatula to coat all pieces. This can be done in advance or put on at the last minute before serving. It does not need to marinate.

I will be starting tomorrow. On the list of things to do:

-Make the cranberry sauce
-Make the pumpkin pie
-Make the peanut butter pie
-Make the cornbread, cool, cube it, and let it dry out
-Cube the french bread and let it dry out
-Break up the hamburger buns and let them dry out
-Saute the onions and celery

I think that is it.

I have been cooking all day-with an 11 month old under foot! I made pumpkin bread, apple spice bread, cranberry bread, choc chip cookies, magic cookie bars, quiche lorraine(for breakfast while watching the parade) and boiled the sweet potatoes but still have to cut them up and layer them in dish with butter and brown sugar.I will do asparagus with breadcrumb and parm cheese topping on Thurs morning before I go to my mothers for dinner. My mom makes the turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and does all the cleaning which is alot for her to do alone so I try to do as much as I can.I used to go over to help her the week before but now with two kids it is easier to do what I can at home.
