So Who's Learning the Na'vi Language in Preparation for Their Trip?

Just saw the Na'vi language primer, and learned about the new product Disney will be offering this summer: The Na'vi Translator Device. For a person who has studied four languages and teaches English, this is right up my alley.

Anyone know the origins of this language? Was it created for the movie, or was it created by Disney for their new land? Maybe a mix of both? I found some sites that claim to have dictionaries for the language, but how do we know if this is the language they are using in the park, or if this is something some random person just made up?

At any rate, I will be able to say "please," "thanks," and "Eywa be with you" in Na'vi by the time I get to Pandora. As someone who has traveled to several foreign lands, it just seems like the right thing to do.

I got DGD the translator on our visit on opening day, along with about 10 sets of trading cards. She's counted how many she has and how many she still has to go but I forget now what she figured out. She amazingly, didn't get too many duplicates. We did have fun with the translator, it's a neat little toy and the cards aren't too expensive

Yes, they created the language for the movie and the actors learned it. If you want to hear pronunciation and learn many more words, just watch the movie, it does include what Disney included in the primer for the most part. There's also official companion material that teaches it as well (from the movie). The only word I learned was "skxawng" pronounced "scown" as in "frown"... it means "moron." lol

I'll probably have several occasions to use that one while I'm at the park. :D

I do not exept to meet any na've while I am at pandora so I will not need it this time. When I return I may venture outside into more traditional na've areas so I will learn it for the next trip

I am a lifetime fan of the Star Trek franchise, and I still haven't learned the first word of Klingon. So no, not bothering with Na'vi.

A few words of Klingon for you.

mo’Dajvo’ pa’wIjDaq je narghpu’ He’So’bogh SajlIj

("Your stinking pet has escaped from its cage and appeared in my quarters.")

Now you know a few words. Use them wisely.

:P

I made Na'vi Shirts for opening day with the phrase "I see you" in Na'vi and about 2 other languages. We got lots of comments on them!
How fun! I thought that "I see you" was an odd phrase to list in the primer, especially since "Hello" and "Where is the bathroom?" were not in the one I saw online.

But I think a T-shirt is a good place for that phrase.

Maybe the phrase has a double meaning? Maybe it also means, "I see what you mean"?

It is a phrase used in many countries (I know in parts of the African continent) as a greeting of acknowledgement. I love the phrase, and used a Na'vi as the background, and made the eye glow in the dark.

Can you actually use it in conversing with any CMs or anything? If so, then I might learn some. Much like I have learned some for purchases in world showcase.
