So what's to do in Pittsburgh?

DW Lauri (MeanLaureen) found out today that they are sending her to Pittsburgh in September for a Christmas Conference. While we have both been to the eastern end of PA because she has relatives living there, neither of us have visited Pittsburgh.

Any advice on good places to eat or things to see?

I know of several things to do with kids (Kennywood, waterpark, science museum--which would be fun for the 2 of you), but I did want to clear one thing up. She knows that Christmas isn't in September, right? ;) :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

As you can see, I'm from Pittsburgh (having lived here for 9 years), so I agree, there's plenty to do. Much of it, of course, depends on what you're interested in.

I would want to know where you're staying, and whether or not you have a car. Public transportation isn't bad, but unless you're heading for the South Hills, you're stuck with busses.

Let me know, and I'll be happy to suggest things.

She said as of right now all she knows is that she is staying in a Hilton. And it will be probably near the airport since they have to fly several hundred people in for this meeting. Hopefully she'll get more information soon

don't forget the "h" in Pittsburgh;) .

She'll be on an expense account, rent a car - you'll need one. You may be @ the Hilton downtown (in process of a rehab I believe).

*Steelers & Pirates will be playing.

*Lots of concerts, especially on the weekends.

*Carnegie museum (science center, art/natural, Andy Warhol)

*Kennywood, Sandcastle water park & Idlewild close early in Sept.

*Station Square fun entertainment district

*SouthSide - party city!

*Ride the incline up to Mt. Washington, great restaurants & the view is to die for...speaking of which, try to come into downtown @ night thru the tunnels.

*Waterfront area down river in Homestead is another entertainment/shopping hot spot.

Enjoy the 'burg...hey younz guys: don't forget to try an Iron City Beer & have a Primanti's Sammich.:thumbsup2

Oops! I realized that the second time I came back to check the thread. I fixed it :)

I was just checking flights. She's not a happy camper. There isn't a whole lot of choice coming out of Richmond. AirTran can't get her there in time for the first meeting. Jet Blue is a good option but not direct - she would have to change in JFK. US Airways (or, as we call them, US Scareways) is the only direct but it is very pricey and Lauri absolutely HATES flying with them. She's going to call her boss on Weds. and demand her blue tortilla chips on a Jet Blue flight. :rotfl:

I have to agree with all this. Of course, you won't be able to get Steeler tickets (each game is sold out - season ticket holders only), but visiting PNC Park is worth it, even if the Pirates are not very good.

The view from Mt Washington is incredible. So are the prices of the restaurants on there. But if you're on an expense account.... A good proportion of restaurants in town are chains, but if you check a local website (realpittsburgh.com, etc.) you'll find recommendations for the type of food yo like.

Oh, by the way, I wouldn't bother with an Arn (Iron City Beer) because it is truly undrinkable, but a Primanti Brothers sandwich? Worth every carb!
