Texas is great!!! The best Mexican food in the world is here in San Antonio.

Also the wide open space, sometimes the heat does get to you like people have said before but you do get use to it.

There is always something to do. You can also have a vacation somewhere here in Texas either the coast good beaches best is South Padre Island, great big cities Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, & Austin.

If you like football wait until the fall when high school football is going on. Us, Texans are crazy for the high school football (Friday Night Lights movie) that took place in Odessa up in North Texas.

Too many other things to list but I promise from someone who was not born here (military brat) I got here as fast as I could.

One thing I remember when we 1st moved here when I was 12 was going to the mall on Christmas Eve in shorts & sandals temp was 92 degrees which was so different coming from Germany in the snow.

Hope you enjoy it here!!!
I agree with everything you said, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't Odessa in West Texas, in the Permian Basin??

You might check on hotels in Allen. They have quite a few hotels less than 5 years old. My office books speakers at hotels near 75 and LBJ. There is a Holiday Inn Express off Greenville Ave and also a Homewood Suites off Spring Valley. We have used Southfork Hotel at 75 and 15th in Plano for events and people have been fairly pleased with it. Last time, we were booked at the same time as a homicide conference so we had many police with us. I do not know their rates.
And yes, Odessa is in west Texas, about 350 miles from north Texas.

Actually, Whataburger has wonderful chicken strips and salads. I don't know about In and Out.

I don't really know much about the hotels in the area but it really depends on what part of Plano you intend to look in. Plano is pretty big so looks along the Dallas North Tollway if you're interested in west Plano or up in McKinney if you plan to look in that direction. Don't rule out Allen which is right by McKinney and Plano along I-75. This little town has good schools, a bit better home pricing and tends to be quieter.

One word of caution, get a good map and try to avoid 121. It's under major construction and can be a mess. If you wander into Frisco where we live at any time, try to be patient. We're having some major growing pains and traffic can be a nightmare. Once it's all done, I expect a nice situation though.

Good things about Texas? Restaurants, shopping, good people, reasonably close to the Ozarks (I adore them. :) ), Fort Worth arts, mild winters, low taxes. We have two good airporst and Southwest is fighting the Wright amendment. Hopefully they'll succeed so that we take SW to Florida!

Be prepare for the heat! When you come, it'll be scorching and you'll probably wonder why the heck you moved here. Most people get used to the brutal summers and take it in stride after a while. Besides, it gives us all something to complain (and brag) about. ;)

If I were you, I'd look for a hotel in the Plano area, McKinney, Allen, Frisco or The Colony just so you can get a feel for the area. I wouldn't come on down into Dallas unless you want to do some sightseeing. I grew up in Dallas and now live just to the east. We have good schools here also if you want to consider us.

We're also getting a new indoor water park resort built out by the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. I believe it's opening up next year.

Another thing you'll learn after you get here is that us Texans are always "fixin" to do something. :)

Whataburger-YUCK! Greasy burgers and wimpy fries! In-N-Out Burger has nothing to fear. You will miss that!

Taco Cabana-pretty plain but then we were spoiled by Taco Casa in ALABAMA! Yes, ALABAMA has better fast food Mexican then Texas. But for real Tex-Mex restauants Texas is wonderful!

Texas is a fun place to visit and live. I don't plan on staying here forever...its just not my thing. But it is an adventure!

You went to the wrong Whataburger then ;)

Using Taco Cabana as an example of Mexican food in Texas is wrong. There is soooo much good food, you just have to avoid the chains and find the locally owned stuff (Hello, Joe T. Garcia's anyone?), Christina's (Lewisville, Flower Mound, Frisco), Ojeda's...I could go on.

Thanks again folks! :Pinkbounc

Slimplaw, Thanks for the info regarding the SouthFork Hotel. I keep going back to that one on Expedia and Hotels.com. They look pretty nice and their rates are really good.
