So what do you do with a car you've driven into the ground?

I'd put it on the side of the road with a sign, and also post it on craigslist as well. You could try ebay, but the fees for auto are outrageous. Just be wary of the scammers on craigslist and you should be good to go. You could even post it as make an offer.

My dad had an old Mercury Sable. It needed about $800 in work to get it to pass inspection. He put it in his yard with a for sale sign: For Sale As Is, $400. A young man just out of the army bought it and repaired it himself and it's still running! I'd try the classifieds or even just putting it in your driveway with a sign!

Sell it- give full disclosure about any problems that you are aware of and then let it go, cheap! We've done it several times and have always thought, "no one is going to buy this" but someone always does and usually really quickly.

We did sell one wrecked, undrivable 11 year old Ford Escort for scrap- got $75. We just wanted that one out of the driveway.

Over the years, we've donated two cars to charity. The write-offs were more than we ever could've sold the cars for, and the charities were thrilled to get them. :thumbsup2

Some states buy old cars to decommission them. It really depends on the state. I know in California, if you have an old car that won't pass smog check, the state will buy it back for up to $500.
