So what are the chances

I'm wondering, in light of reading the horror stories of renting situations gone wrong (ex: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2574086), what are the chances people are even interested in renting to "first timers" anymore?

I'm considering trying DVC points rental for a (......edited to remove details.....) 2012 trip to the world (will be my wife's and my first visit!), but I'm wondering if there is a point to me pursuing this as I have little to no history on the boards, etc. I know for myself, before entering into a points renting situation one of the first things I would verify is the post count and contents of past posts of the person I'm renting from.

I don't know, is there a stigma surrounding first time renters? Is there any sort of information I can offer to potential DVC members that will allay their suspicions? I'm just thinking out loud here. Let me know what you think. Have you ever rented to a first timer? What was your experience like?

I don't rent, but if you have trouble finding something from a single owner, you can always use the board's sponsor. There's still savings from what Disney charges.

Good luck! :wizard:

There are several months before anyone can make a reservation for 2012, so you have some time to make posts. Ask questions, contribute your opinions and you'll have a history in no time. :)

And there are owners who will rent to first timers and even enjoy working with them. And as Bobbi said, you can always check out Daddio's service as well.

Welcome to the Boards - hope to see you around. :)

P.S. I edited your post to remove the month of travel so that your post won't be construed as a request to rent. That's not allowed here, but general questions on renting are welcome.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been checking out david's DVC Points rental site and am certainly considering it. Would be nice to save 2 or 3 bux per point by renting off the boards, but maybe it is a good option to go through David's site as a first timer. I've also heard people recently lamenting the changes made in the payment timeline/options for DDP, and I definitely want DDP for our trip.

I have rented to new renters a couple of times and everything went fine. I think that communication between the two parties can be one of the best ways of establishing trust as well as reviewing previous posts of course. Hopefully the ones out to take advantage are very few and far between. I have been more nervous about the idea of transferring points as once that is done I would have no recourse at all where if I rent a reservation I at least can cancel if payment is not made. Now with the credit card fraud issue I will be rethinking everything.

I have rented to first timers in the past also and without any problems. There are different contracts and agreements that people use on these boards and everything usually goes well. As long as both parties agree to the terms set, there shouldn't be any problems.
