Yikes! When he came in, I just said "gun"? He said his previous house call was an elderly couple, the man is hard of hearing so he talks to the wife - apparently the man was napping and was startled by the technician - the man just went bonkers... tech got out of there. He said the wife was trying to calm the man down.

They're thinking the man has some type of dementia/alzheimers - needless to say, I think that contract has been terminated!

Sad. I have a client whose dad thought that He (the son) was a robber and the father went and got a gun. Scary stuff when they don't know, can't remember or whatever. Sounds like the family needs to take some action before someone (like the mailman etc.) gets hurt!

My next door neighbor has dementia and a couple of years ago his wife tried to take all the guns away. He got all bent out of shape and started having "episodes".

Currently he still has the guns--just no ammunition (some are even without firing pins). He is never alone (so no possibility of getting any ammunition) and all of his "minders" know that the guns are unarmed. Since I occasionally watch him, and helped his wife get rid of the ammunition years ago, I am in on the secret. She has also been getting rid of some of the guns over time, but she won't ever be able to get rid of them all--funny what things people remember. Nothing like seeing an old man walk around his kitchen with a gun tucked into his blue "old man pajama bottoms".

I live in a small town... the way I see this being handled is that the owner of the PC company called a friend "in the department" who most likely knows the man with the gun - police will handle it, most likely getting him to relinquish it. I'm not sure there has been an "official" diagnosis of dementia or alzheimers, but I really feel sorry for his wife - she was there the entire time today.

Seems a shame to me that a person doesn't even have to be mentally competent to own a dangerous weapon. It's like allowing a blind person to drive a car. Sigh.
