I lost my golden a couple of months ago to cancer. He'd been sick for about a year. I recently decided to check out rescues and found a one year old, which I think would be perfect for me right now. I was not looking to replace Elvis, but just thought rescuing a dog who needs rescued would put a little sunshine back in my life and give me an opportunity to make a dog a very happy home.

I sent the director an email with a few questions about the dog, to which she responded the next day. I immediately responded with a few more questions asking if I could meet the dog and received no response. I emailed her again a couple of days later and told her I was very interested, and understand if I don't meet their criteria, but would appreciate a response.

Fast Forward to tonight, I've been checking on Facebook to see if there was anything more about the dog, as he was also on there and even posted on there about my interest in the dog. So, again no response. Now, tonight, I get on and this same person is taking the dog to meet someone else and of course it's a friend of a friend.

I'm so pissed off right now. I completely understand if she thinks someone else is a better fit, but couldn't she at least have the decency to respond and say I'm sorry, but we've found someone else. I've been trying to get in touch with her for 10 days now. I just think it's so incredibly rude to ignore my emails and all I was trying to do is give another dog the chance to have as great of a home as Elvis did!

I agree, it was incredibly rude. It's not as if your e-mails were going to her spam box, since she initially responded. A simple, "Someone is already interested in that dog, but thank you for your inquiries" (even if that wasn't the 100% truth) would have been the right response.

Yeah, agreed. The thing is from the looks of the other person's post, they only just inquired this week. Again, a simple acknowledgement of I got your email, but unfortunately we don't think you're the right fit, would have really been appreciated. So, instead, now I had my hopes up for nothing. It's just so rude!

I'm sorry. I just don't know what has happened to common courtesy these days. I volunteer with a greyhound rescue group and we would never leave someone hanging like that. We want to get as many dogs off the tracks as we can.

I hope you can find another dog. Not to replace of course but to give a chance at life.

Yeah, I think that's exactly it, which made me think maybe she's busy or I just don't meet the criteria they're looking for; which I'd understand. Instead, she left me hanging, which got my hopes up. Yes, and you'd think they'd be very interested in getting a dog adopted out and thoroughly checking out all avenues to make sure they go the best home.

I bet you are her back-up. She doesn't want to respond to you and give you false hope or reject you outright. She is going to meet this person, then if it doesn't work out I bet she calls you.

Yes, it's rude.

I hadn't thought of that, but it doesn't make me want to work with her, if that is the case; but of course I wouldn't let her rudeness interfere with giving a dog a good home. If that's the case, she should have said, I have someone else in mind and if doesn't work out for whatever reason, I'll be in touch.

A little communication goes a long way...

From what I've heard about rescue dogs, it's like adopting a baby. We're thinking about getting a dog eventually, but I will get an applications in several months before we even start looking. I'm sorry she didn't get back to you, but just keep in mind, she is a volunteer. Maybe a 100 other people had interest also.

Yes, this. We ended up adopting a dog from a post on petfinder who lived hundreds of miles away because it was easier and I didn't feel as if I needed to divulge all sorts of personal information to adopt a dog. It's been 2 years now and it's worked out very well.

Yes, I'm finding all that out. I don't mind jumping through hoops, just find it ridiculous she's got time to post on facebook, but not answer my emails.

I actually, found the dog on pet finder. I'm beginning to think rescue is just too much trouble, which is totally the opposite of how it should be, when you're trying to do something good to help out an unfortunate dog. I was hoping not to go the puppy route this time, as I'm not sure I've have the time and patience for potty training right now.

This is becoming an eye opening experience. That's for sure and not necessarily a positive one.

Please don't discredit all rescues from this experience. These are the kind of rescues that give all rescues a bad name. There are some very good ones out there.

Your best bet is to contact your local Golden Society and see which rescues they recommend and then go from there.

Have you considered a retired show dog? They are excellent dogs as they are already socialized, have outstanding breeding and health clearances, and have all the basic training down. They may have the slightest conformation fault that would make the breeder want to find a good forever home.

Thanks for your thoughts. I know there are some good ones out there. I guess I just wasn't expecting this. I had emailed a couple other breeders in the area also, and nothing. I understand busy and being a volunteer, but I just think is it really that hard to take two seconds to respond to an email? Short and sweet would have been just fine. I just can't believe it's so acceptable to ignore people these days.

A show dog would be great, but I can't afford to pay $1000 for a dog and I'd really like no older than one year or so. I just went through one loss, I don't want another anytime soon. So, I just can't do an older dog right now. I will keep looking. My experience so far has just been a little disheartening and not at all what I expected, but I'm learning.

Funny you should post about this. I was just talking to my sister. She is having the same problem with rescue groups. She is trying to adopt a Newfoundland. She is running into the same problem. No one will respond to her. It's not like she isn't qualified. She does not want to go with a breeder. She wants to take in a rescue dog. She is getting so disheartened. It really is a shame. Any dog would have a wonderful life with her.

First I would like to say I am sorry to hear about the loss of your golden. I have a golden also (Bella) and I can not fathom losing her.

I do think it was rude of the rescue group not to contact you instead of leaving you hanging that way. I have heard it is very hard to qualify for a rescue dog , I was forturnate to find a wonderful breeder in my state and although she had some requirements to purchase one of her puppies she understood my wanting a companion and matched me up with a puppy that was somewhat low key.

I hope the rescue group gets in contact with you and I hope you find a new friend soon

Yes same in our area some of the rescues are crazy. It is an animal not a human infant.
We avoided the Humane society for that reason. I'm sorry a home visit, signing what food you will feed, having to have a fence, the list went on. I can see a vet reference, personal references, whether you own or rent and then if renting proof you can have a pet. But to specify what food I will feed and make me sign saying I will do this. They would rather put an animal to sleep than let me have it unless I will verify what food I will feed! There is something very wrong with that. And if you find an animal that is right they won't hold it even overnight so you can jump thru their hoops!

We did find a rescue that is reasonable but you shouldn't have to hunt all over for one.

are there any open adoption days? Our beagle-mix was from a rescue group in Michigan (Oshtemo). I had to fill out paperwork and pay, but other than that, they were quite easy to deal with. Our local rescue group, they do the open adoption days also (Petco and Petsmart) and we've been in there to see the dogs go home with the new family on the same day.

Have you tried through the AKC website? I know there are rescue pages through there. Not sure if that is what you meant in one of your previous posts.

Good luck.

Yes, I've noticed some that do adoption days. The one I was working with did them, but I was about a week too late. I will check the AKC website. Thanks.

Yeah, I'm just not having a lot of luck here. I found a puppy that turned out to be a scammer. The old I've moved send me $250 and I'll ship the puppy to you. Yeah right!

Next experience, emailed a breeder out of Columbus - No response. Called about a 3 month old...already sold to someone else.

Emailed a lady about a puppy...no response...called her...no answer...no return phone call.

Then, I thought I found the perfect dog and that would be this experience the non responsive rescue group. I'm beginning to think maybe I'm just not supposed to have a dog right now, but I perservere because I think having a dog would be good for both of us!

This is so familiar. I went through similar troubles looking for a terrier puppy. I wanted a three year old as I have a three year old dog already.

It took two years, then I found a wonderful Yorkie puppy who is a perfect addition to our family.

Keep trying! It took us weeks to find the right puppy then several more week waiting for her to come home. In the end we have the perfect dog for us. We tried rescue but since we have DS4 they would not allow us to adopt. We ended up going through a breeder. It is so hard finding just the right dog.

I'm in northern Indiana, just outside of South Bend. One of our rescue groups is Pet Refuge. I think they have a mix and I looked and there are plenty of open adoption days coming up. My neighbor fosters kittens for them. Seems like a good group. Maybe check their website? They had some cute dogs on there and if I didn't have my hands full with two already... :lovestruc

We weren't looking for a dog but one found us. My husband called me and said to come in, one of the office gals, her daughter, rescued a chihuahua from a home. We never planned on keeping her but she is one of the most loving dogs we've ever seen. I probably never would have considered one otherwise.
