So the general consensus seems to be The Who wasn't good last night...

I think U2 has done a Superbowl show already

I think U2 has done a Superbowl show already

2002 in New Orleans.

I don't watch CSI and I saw absolutely nothing like a "CSI commercial". What did I miss?

The Who is used for all the theme songs for all the CSI shows. Look at how many people said "ohh the CSI songs" and tell me that having The Who perform didn't promote CSI.

It was probably both, with them singing along to pre-recorded tracks.

They didn't sound "great", but it sure beat having a lip-syncing pop-tart out there!

Amen! :thumbsup2

ETA: Even if they were lip-synching, I'd still rather watch them than a lot of other options the network could've gone with.

Not everyone believes they were lip syncing:

The Who's Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend huffed and puffed as they tried to match the energy and bravado of songs originally recorded more than 30 years ago Sunday in their showcase slot as Super Bowl halftime headliners.
These gruff, grizzled rock ‘n’ roll lifers gave it a good go as they chased past glories. At least Daltrey and Townshend weren’t lip-synching as they struck poses amid the lasers and pyrotechnics. Townshend in shades and porkpie hat swung through windmill chords, Daltrey bellowed and blew through a harmonica solo, and drummer Zak Starkey (yes, Ringo’s son) wore a union-jack shirt for the occasion, evoking the band’s earliest publicity photos from Britain’s Mod era.

Of course, back then Keith Moon was the band’s drummer and John Entwistle its bassist. Both are long gone, and The Who has never really been the same since. No matter, Daltrey and Townshend keep pushing the brand and have licensed their music to countless advertisers to keep it alive. Their set list played like a compendium of TV commercials from the last decade as much as a classic-rock primer: snippets of “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Who Are You,” “See Me, Feel Me,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” It all built up to the climactic, spleen-busting, technologically-enhanced Daltrey scream. Couldn’t have said it better myself, Roger.

The pregame performances -- Queen Latifah’s gospelized take on “America the Beautiful” and Carrie Underwood’s a capella “Star Spangled Banner” -- both had a few duff notes, suggesting they weren’t performed to backing tracks. In both instances, I found myself appreciating the powerhouse national anthems performed by Jim Cornelison at Blackhawks home games even more.

That second bolded part, a friend refers to that as FOH processing and describes it like this: "FOH processing during Zep's latter tours were also "fakeing" any real vocals. If all it takes it to hit the note for a second.......and catch it on a infinite repeate on a delay.....and fade out the delay just as the scream trails off while the singer picks back up on it......that's nothing new. Just part of any pro live show in rock"

I read where someone said they had syncing issues and others did not. I wonder if there was a delay (I thought they were implementing this because of the JJ pastie debacle.) or the FOH processing.

Also Daltrey said he was blinded by the lights:

Which might explain Daltrey's "lost" expression.

Again, I was really impressed by 65 yr old men doing what they did. I doubt I would sound the way I did when I was 20-something when I'm 65. The light-show still was great. Still wonder if Townsend had help, esp. with his hearing pretty much gone.

As for who I would like to see, I would go with Hagar/Chickenfoot. I think they would be a fun, rocking show. Please no AI people.

Aye, it was. Easily a better drummer than his dad but that isnt saying much. :)
Neither one is a Bonzo.

I love classic rock, and so I was in my element last night with The Who, although I ended up closing my eyes and just listening to the music...they were completely boring on stage...

The best part of the Halftime Show for our group was when a 15-year-old got a complete look of shock on her face and exclaimed "I didn't know these guys sang the theme from CSI: Miami/New York/Las Vegas!" after each song was performed... :lmao:

I loved last year's halftime show with Bruce Springsteen, and a couple of years ago with Prince. It seems like ever since the "wardrobe malfunction," CBS has been playing it safe. I miss the days before N*****gate...when the halftime show was (sometimes) more exciting than the game itself...

I'd just like to see someone that is relevant. The Who is a total nobody as of today. Get an act that's current and not a washed up has-been.

Most people under the age of 30 probably didn't even know who they were. :confused3

My 12 year old loves The Who and all the classic rock bands. He has a Who tshirt that he got for Christmas. His Ipod has their greatest hits downloaded.

He has discovered all the classic rock music from his games like Guitar Hero and Rockband.

All of his friends are the same way. They prefer this to some fo the newer stuff.

Not if you know anything about music. My 15 1/2 year old DD and her friends watching with us all knew "who" the Who were and they don't watch CSI. They also know the Beatles, Journey, Stevie Wonder, Foreigner, Boston, Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers and on and on... DH and I get the biggest kick when she comes to us and plays a song she's downloaded and asks "have you ever heard this song?" and then we show her we still have the vinyl album.

This is DS exactly. He is always asking us about classic rock. It is so much fun to share the music with him. We even quiz him when a song comes on the radio, last week he had fun recognixing it was Eric Clapton when "Layla" came on the radio.

The halftime show was ok. The Who just cant sing like they use to.

agree that the Who halftime show was just ok - DH, a big Who fan, was disappointed in that they're now "showing their age"....

Per the entertainment writer at The Grand Rapids Press who no doubt watched the performance from his living room too.... I'll wait to hear from a higher authority on the verdict. I'll grant that elements of the show were pre-recorded as is the norm for "time certain" performances like that one, but there were enough "rough edges" to make it clear that it wasn't all Memorex.

Amen! :thumbsup2

I agree!:thumbsup2 I thought they did pretty good last night. I'd much rather see any classic rock band than the same "artists" (Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa, Taylor Swift, etc.) that appear on every other TV special. Talk about boring.

Oh, and my kids (15) and (19) did know who they were, even without the CSI music.

Other classics I would love to see as halftime shows, in no particular order:

The Kinks

Chuck Berry

Eric Clapton

Elton John

Billy Joel

Stevie Wonder

Led Zeppelin

Anyone still relevant would be nice. Anyone not on SS or in AARP would be nice.

I'd prefer a mix. The Super Bowl is watched by millions, the entertainment should better reflect the likes of those millions, not just 11.86% of those millions. Have a pop singer. Have a country singer. Have a rock artist or group. All at once on the same stage. Take turns. Or do a medley somehow. There are ways to do it and be cool and everyone can enjoy something.

We fast forwarded through the entire halftime show last night. I could care less about The Who.

If the 18-35 year old demographic is so all fire important to ratings then why on earth do they keep gettings acts more suited to the 55-70 year old demographic?

Because my brothers who fall into this age category love classic rock as well and listen to all this music, as well as our major football fans. The bands do cover many generation. In our room, my mom is 64, she knows who The Who is, but they were racy for her back then:lmao:, then DH and I are 46 and 40, we grew up listening to The Who, and then you have my brothers 30 and 26, who like The Who and then DS12 who through Rockband have rediscovered all of these classic rock bands.

Unlike a Lady Gaga, who my mom has no clue who she is, DH has no clue, I dont really like her, my brothers cant stand any of that music, and DS12 thinks she is overrated.

26 year old here and I have no interest in seeing any auto-tune modern crap perform half time. You can see that garbage anywhere. It's not a secret why very few modern artists can sell out arenas, but classic rockers sell out like it's the 1970s.

The Who and other recent halftime time acts have been selected based on their appeal to those in attendance at the Super Bowl. The demographic of Super Bowl attendees is corporate types and others over the age of 35 who are willing and able to fork out $1,000 for a seat. The NFL is courting its corporate box owners and season ticket holders.

oh, The Kinks!!!! That would be great!:)

I love The Who and totally enjoyed last night!:)

I would rather see classic artists than any of the teeny bopper pop stars, but I wouldn't have a problem with Green Day!!!!

DD12 is in a Beatles phase, but she knows The Who and their music, without watching CSI.....
