So That's What Jesus Would Do......(?)

^My Speech professor actually mentioned this not too long ago. Very sad truth.

Come live in a red state for several months. You'll soon come to realize that most evangelicals value the life of the unborn much more heavily than those lives which are already here. They'll scream & holler the evils of abortion, but heaven forbid you marry a minority or come from a different nation. It's perfectly okay to wage wars based on faulty intelligence, and destroy the lives of innocent civillians(they are, afterall, not from here and could pose a threat). But you're the antichrist if you value a woman's right to choice and privacy when it comes to the abortion issue. :sad2:

"Save the fetus, but to hell with those foreigners." (The red state conservative viewpoint in one line).

:grouphug: Can I give you hug? The people you are around are obviously not very kind, and I am sorry for that. Although I do know some people like that, I am fortunate that most of my Christian friends are not like the people you describe because if they were I would find that disheartening.

.

I had a youth pastor tell me once that he didn't like the state of Florida because of all the hispanics and foreigners.

Guess he wouldn't like the state of Texas neither!;) Down here, it's pretty much a given that you are or are going to be bilingual because there are so many Hispanics/Latinos (there is a difference, or at least that's what I've been told. Hispanic refers ONLY to those who are from Mexico or of Mexican heritage. Latino refers to everybody else--South or Latin American).

"I like your Christ but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."--Gandhi

How is it that DIS'ers always know how to bring a smile to someone who needs it. :)
And no, people here on the boards don't have the ethnocentric mentality that we see in our local community. You guys seem to have this little thing called common sense which is in lack where I'm from. ;)

But yes I'm just venting some heartfelt thoughts. Been a hard week having to bury a grandparent, etc. Not attacking Christians as a whole, just the folks I'm surrounded with down here in the sticks.

Like the previous poster said The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit love everyone just the way they are.

And there is no way that everything that we say and do can be "Jesus like".
There may be some moments when we have "Christian clarity" and manage to say something that is Christian like but other times, under different influence or out of frustration we are not so Christian like, even though we all may try to be.
So keep trying and forgive each other for trespasses.

I live in the Nashville area, but fortunately for the most part, my church is very warm and welcoming. My best friend is married to an Arabic Christian, and I have been so loved and welcomed by his friends and family. I feel fortunate that I have been exposed to many different ethnic groups and cultures here.

I had a roommate a few years ago who moved to Canada from Egypt, where she and her parents were born, when she was quite young. The first language in her house was French, they were Catholic, and the family had a Russian last name. The parents spoke English, French, Arabic, Spanish, and I think the father also spoke Russian (plus a few other languages; he is a very smart man). After Sept. 11, there were people that were not so nice to them...

I've learned that there are bigots pretty much anywhere we go. Sad, but true. It's not limited to any one group or religion.

DisFlan

Exactly, which is why it's even more annoying when Christian folks talk about morals and push their views on other people. They're no better than the rest of the non Christian people. All religon, all people, all sinners.

Just because we are not perfect doesn't mean that our truth isn't ... well.... true.
Jesus showed us how to behave. This is what we are striving to achieve. Unfortunately, we often fall short of it. That doesn't mean that Christian morals are wrong. We still want to encourage others to please Christ, just as we are trying to.

To paint all Christians as bigots is the same as painting all Arabs as terrorists. I get the feeling from the OP that Christians are hyprocrites. Is Christian bashing the only type of bashing liberals still allow?

I agree with you completely. It makes me incredibly angry and sad at the same time ...

Kathee

I don't agree with your cousin, but I would suspect that it has less to do with "race" than with the ongoing issues between the Arabs and the Jews. At least that is what I see and hear amidst the conservatives in this area.

It seems to me as though you are broadbrushing as much as he did.

Huh? Please explain how that can be?
Kathee

OP, I am sorry that your cousin thinks those things. Clearly, disliking a group of people based on their race is contrary to Scripture. As a Christian, I know I do and say things that are not in line with what I believe on occasion. I know that I have been forgiven by the grace of God, but I also know that my shortcomings are a very poor reflection on Jesus. As others have said, Christians are far from perfect. It's a daily struggle for me to be more and more like Christ in my attitudes and behaviors. Allow God to have some time to change your cousin's heart and attitude.

I would caution you to be careful about painting with too broad of a brush. I am an evangelical Christian who lives in a red state, and neither my God nor my local church teach hatred of anyone. So please don't assume that one person speaks for all Christians (even evangelical ones). I'm sorry you encountered that kind of hatred, especially during a difficult week for you. My grandma has a terminal heart condition, and I am thinking more and more about the day she passes on. My prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time--may the Lord comfort you and give you peace as you miss your grandmother.

I do not subscribe to this, please be clear.

But, the reason that I hear most in the conservative crowd I am often around for disliking that Arab nations is the general hatred between those nations and the Jewish nation. These people see Israel as continuing to be the "apple of God's eye" and any nation that goes against them is virtually evil.

Our area has many Mexicans, legal and otherwise, African Americans, and Native Americans. I don't see skin color to be the factor, because it isn't with these groups (many who attend the same church together.)

So, I see the assumption of racism to be inaccurate and broadbrushed. It isn't a race issue, just as the hatred many americans had for the russians wasn't a race issue.
