So sad, things didn't work out :(

So I have just started posting on here in the past month. We booked our free dining trip to POR for December 10-18. First time taking our youngest 2nd trip for the other kids and 3rd trip for hubby and I. I have the entire trip all planned out, including both plans for driving and flying, our agendas and everything. We always take a loan out for our vacations. Well we got declined for our vacation. I am devastated. I really though that since we got one 3 years ago and paid on time every month that this time would be no different. Unfortunately this means we have to cancel our trip, full payment is due on Monday and I don't want to take the chances of losing the 200.00 we put down on it. Any comforting words would be greatly appreciated. The kids are going to be oh so sad. They didn't know when we were going only that we were going soon and now we aren't going at all.

So sorry it didn't work out. We started planning our trip not knowing if we'd actually go. The more planning you do the more excited you get.... we're going to have to pay it on a credit card not knowing how long it'll take to pay back. For someone that doesn't keep balances that is so hard. Needless to say we're not going to be able to go again for a long time, but it's worth it while the boys are still young.
Just wanted to send

So sorry. It is so much harder these days to get credit lines and loans.I have perfect credit and NO debt, and got declined for things.

I'm so sorry. :grouphug: Don't worry, hopefully things will get better and you will be able to plan another trip sometime in the near future.

I know this doesnt help this time but what if you planned the same trip for next dec and just made online payments as if you were paying the loan. We are staying at POR and we booked in sept and we are paying everymonth at disney.com. we are staying for 7 nights and we got park hoppers and the dining plan its coasting us about 2500. so 100 a month plus som tax refund money will pay that off by the time its due. and the 100 a month comes from what I save in coupons and sales for food shopping. Im sorry you wont make it this time good luck !

I'm so sorry; as I understand it, you would still lose the $200 deposit at this point if you cancel your trip. You can, however, move it like the PP suggested.

We had to cancel our trip last September, and though it was dissapointing, we are saving for the trip we moved it to, next September.

i'm so sorry. that does stink! we shouldn't be going on our trip - literally have no money to spare - but by the time we decided to cancel our travel companions had bought their airline tickets and half of ours! now we're struggling to pull the rest of the money together and we know it'll be the last time for a while... it's just so hard to come up with extra spending money these days... we're all feeling the pinch. :(

i think the suggestion from the previous 2 posters is great though! postpone it by 1 year and make the payments to the vacation vs. a loan!

I am just in shock that someone would take out a loan to go on vacation. I agree with a PP that you should book your trip for a time that you can afford it. (Puting the money into savings that you would have sent in as a loan payment) You get more for your money this way by avoiding interest charges and gaining interest however small it may be now.

I happen to agree with you on this, but didn't say it in my pp.But alot of people do this nowadays.I know I have been fortunate to always have the cash for my trips in advance, not everyone is so lucky. But like I said even people with NO DEBT and GREAT credit, are having issues with loans. It is a bad time for the economy

We prefer to live life debt free. If we don't have the money for vacations we don't take them. We saved for 10 months for our upcoming DW trip and did a lot of skimping along the way.
I think that is one reason the econmoy is so terrible is that we have become a country that is so used to living beyond our means.

I must have misread the OP. Are you still making payments on your vacation from three years ago? Sorry, idle curiosity, it doesn't make much difference one way or the other. If it is the case that you are still making payments on your previous vacation, then you may have been declined on the basis of your debt-to-income ration. Banks are beginning to realize that perfect credit is no good if you're in hock for more than a certain percentage of your income. If you're used to making monthly payments, than I second the PP's suggestion to save up for your trip ahead of time by setting aside some cash each month, saving your $200 deposit by simply transferring it to next year. That is, unless there're still debts to be paid.

Had to know this was coming! Good grief..the poor woman is sad they had to cancel their vacation.

How someone pays for their vacation is no one elses business and not anyone's place to judge, whether the poster cared to share it or not.

I actually think it was a little mean to post that when she's upset. Kick someone when they're down a bit?:sad2:

I am so sorry to hear that you have had to delay your trip. It is such a let-down feeling especially when your children are young. My DD first trip to WDW was when she was 10 and I sooooo regret not taking her when she was younger. :grouphug:

OP: How long would you have been paying on this current loan? Maybe you can just put away the same monthly payment into a savings account for the same amount of time and then make your reservation then? What ever you decide to do, I'm sorry you had to cancel a vacation everyone has been looking forward to. I've had to do it before and it just.....sucks.

we cancelled our trip for november, but i just keep telling myself it is postponed, not cancelled i will get there again. sorry you are feeling so sad.

I had no idea people took out loans for vacations. I've always thought that when you've had a good financial year and can afford it, you go. If you can't pay for it, you skip that year. :confused3 I learn something new everyday.

I feel your pain at having to cancel your trip,:guilty:I too had to cancel our trips in the past, even getting as far as orlando in march but since we pulled our pop up with us for the first time we ended up using a lot more money for gas than we had anticipated, which meant by the time we were in orlando we didn't have the money to go to the parks,:confused3 but all was not lost ,we spent 4 wonderful days in orlando and went to some of the resorts(which was free) also we went to Downtown Disney(also free) we walked around for 2 days there and I have wonderful memories and pictures to prove haw much fun we had.We were heartbroken about not being able to go into the parks, but we decided to call it our"research trip", we learned a lot about orlando and Disney while we were there, and it helped me get my DH to catch the Dis bug so he was even more determined to get in the gate this time around.lol. We have made our share of sacrifices to make this trip again in Dec.,including staying at Fort Wilderness, in tents,no camper this time,if we eat bologna all week we will, lol,it just has to be as simple as possible but we worked our buts off and saved every penny we could, picked up extra work, gave at the plasma center and so on...I just wanted to tell you keep your head up because you don't have to give up your trip just stretch it out a while and who knows you might find that Disney is running an even better deal that suits you a year from now.So just postpone, don't cancel!!! Hope you are in better spirits.:cheer2::grouphug:

Oh, I'm sorry!

But since you know that you can afford those monthly payments, just put those aside and save up, instead! You'll save the interest doing it that way.

Of course it does delay things, and that's not fun...but watching your savings add up for *future* fun, instead of watching money leave for a loan for fun already had, should be fabulous!

I am absolutely NOT going to kick you when you're down. :grouphug: Early in our marriage, hubby and I had no savings to speak of and we used credit cards more than once to take small trips. Nothing extravagent, but really this WAS a bad idea. :sad2: We were making all our payments, but really were living paycheck to paycheck with NO savings. Then our son got sick and our budget went down the toilet, hubby lost his overtime, we had just bought a new car, etc... :headache: We learned real quick that putting ourselves into "debt" even for the little extras was a big mistake.
So here is my suggestion, which I hope will ease the pain of cancelling your trip. Spend the next year or so really thinking about ways you can start tucking extra away (yard sales, cutting back on eating out or movie nights, trimming the Christmas budget or satelite bill, work some overtime, whatever), keep your eye on deals like free dining, off-site hotels, etc. and you might be surprised what you could afford in the next year or so without taking out a loan...
For years, hubby and I took out the max+$20 on our taxes at work, to make sure we got several thousand back when we filed in Feb., we would then use this cash to make home improvements or take vacations (Disney 2005!). This way we didn't really MISS the cash, and we couldn't spend it in the meantime. A traditional savings account works also, if you can avoid digging into it for other "emergencies". :goodvibes (We seemed to have problems with this back then, :confused3 we've gotten much better over the years, especially now that we have an emergency fund for those little surprises. :thumbsup2)
Anyway, back to savings, your kids could participate in this also. You could make a family Disney "graph" like organizations do when they are saving for a big purchase (they use thermometers or whatever and color them in each time they reach a certain level of their goal. You could use a drawing of the castle or mickey head or whatever, mark it off in $100 increments and color them in as you add to your disney savings). You'll all be able to see how close you are getting to your goal and NO ONE will be telling you NO when you book your next trip. :cool1: Maybe you could throw one of those Disney theme nights each time you hit a $500 increment. Borrow a video from the library or friends, make a themed meal, play some themed games. The kids LOVE this stuff, its cheap and it would add to the excitement. :wizard: (There is a whole list of these ideas in this forum if you haven't seen it.)
Take this dissapointing moment and turn it into something exciting, rewarding and magical. Hope your next trip comes soon and is even more Magical than your last few!
:cheer2:

We've had to cancel trips several times due to cancer, financial concerns, wisdom teeth, etc. Just know that there is always a next time. You can start saving now, and go next year, maybe.
