I have taken a death that happened in Boston last night hard. The 21 yr old that died due to the violence around Fenway park as people thought they were celebrating the Sox achievment. I hear dthe name of the girl, I thought it might be the sister of a guy that comes into my place of work, well tonight I saw the father on TV talking about the tragic death and there was Michael with his arm around his father trying to support the tragic accident of his sister. I am sick over what happened. I hope all that was involved with the sick acts of violence, setting a car on fire and acting like freakin fools should be caught and brought to justice. The poor family of Victoria . Please say a prayer for this family.

I'm with you, justice needs to be served. are there any leads to who did this? What a horrible waste of life...

I don't understand violence in celebrating a victory. The most we ever did was roll the tree on the quad (in college.)

It makes no sense to me.

Prayers to this family.

I just heard this on the evening news....what a tragedy! :(

As GailT said: I hope all that was involved with the sick acts of violence, setting a car on fire and acting like freakin fools should be caught and brought to justice.

Someone must take responsibility for this!

My DD's and I this morning talked about the violence last night.
I said to my DD "Why on earth do people want to burn a car and break down a McD's sign because they are happy !!!

I did not hear about the death intill tonight. It makes me sick. I feel so bad for her family.

For what it's worth, it's more complicated than just discovering the person who caused the injury. She died after sustaining a head injury from a 'non lethal' projectile used by a police officer doing crowd control.

This is the first I heard of this. That is truly sad. I hope nothing like that happens here in St. Louis now that the Cardinals just won!

Prayers for her family and friends!

Jodi :sad1:

I watched a lot of this live last night and I was sick to my stomach. I thought we would have things under control after the Patriots won last year and someone died being hit by a drunk driver and lots of damage etc...

Well, last night was just more of the same. They were climbing on trees, street lights, street signs, on buildings. It was crazy! They set fire to a car and wrote on cars and stood on cars. I hope they use the video they took to catch as many as possible. I know that this poor poor girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was hit accidentially by a police officer but if those jerks (not the girl) weren't doing what they were doing and throwing things at the policemen, I don't think she'd be dead.

Why oh why do people want to destroy things when they are celebrating?? I don't understand it at all.

Catch them all and throw the book at them! Please learn from this Boston! :(

Does anyone know why she was there? Boston police and the mayor told people to stay away from the area and that they would not tolerate riot behavior. What's wrong with our young people that they need to destroy property when they celebrate??
I do not feel like the Police were using excessive force. These kids destroyed people's cars! They set fires in the area. They went nuts!!! I know a few people who live near there and they said it was totally out of control. Mostly young drunk males dstroying anything in their path. I guess a lot of cars and building were spray painted. Now,how would you feel if it was your property that was destroyed??
I really think that all bars and liquor stores in the Fenway neighborhood should be closed during the games this week.

I live in Ct. and this summer there was a concert at the Meadows which is an outdoor venue. The morning radio announcer, on WTIC am. Ray Dunaway's son was at the concert. He was literally in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police fired into the crowd with these "non lethal" projectiles and he lost his eye. When he asked for help, the police swore at him and he had trouble getting a ride to the hospital. On investigation, it was found that these projectiles are not to be fired into a crowd, not to be used at close range and not to be aimed above the waist. The HPD admitted that what happened to his son violated all of the rules. There were also embarrassed because Ray Dunaway is a big supporter of the police and city functions. Obviously staging in a victory celebration is not a good idea but there should be non lethal means to disperse a crowd that doesn't have such terrible consequences.

The whole incident is just tragic. The problem stems from alcohol! When these young people are intoxicated, this kind of behavior escalates! I feel terrible for the family of the young lady who died, but I can not fault the Boston PD for doing their job. The responsibility lies in the hands of the people who caused this situation in the first place. Shame on them!

Here's a link to an article about the situation

It's all over local news and radio. what a horrible tragedy.

I agree. The police told them to leave and the crowd got nasty and then this whole situation occurred.
I just don't understand the urge to destroy property because of a sporting event and it seems to be a newer trend - I don't recall any rioting in 86.
Local radio deejays were musing that the increase in rioting is due in a large part to the increase in college students in the city. Since it's not their own city, they don't have the same pride in it as those who live there. Not sure if I agree, but it is something to think about considering the number of arrests on campuses throughout new england the past couple of days.

I don't agree with banning alcohol from the city. They can easily hop on the T and get it elsewhere to bring back to their dorm or apartment and drink.

yeah,I guess you're right about the ban on booze. But don't you think that the bars that are open so close to the Fenway contribute to the problem with people being tanked and then going out into the streets? As far as this young woman being in the wrong place at the wrong time,I bet she knew exactly what was going on in the Fens when she made the choice to go there.
Her father stated that she was a big fan who wanted to celebrate the Sox win. Even though the mayor and cops said NOT TO GO to this area. I'm afraid there will be more injuries and deaths because the drunk people that do this, aren't going to stop.
What do you think will happen in Boston Saturday night after the game? Lets hope all those "innocent bystanders" stay home.

I wonder how many of those college students are "college students". I heard Howie Carr talking about how many college age kids hang around campuses who don't attend and are not enrolled.

A very large percentage of the people in the street were college andd college aged kids who could easily drink on campus or at campus parties and then go out in the streets to party afterwards.

I would rather police spend their time those nights securing the areas - not policing for alcohol.

I understand the concern regarding alcohol and why they would ban it. I just think it's going to make a lot of people angry and it won't do any good and might actually make it worse

People will always find ways to get alcohol and be near sporting events (even when they don't have tickets, fans just like to be near the park during big games). They could close all the bars and I would bet it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

Yeah, and they showed some kid complaining how he was handled by the police. He was trying put it on the cops, how they handled the crowd. Well, pretty-boy, what were you doing that the cops need to "shove" you face down into the ground?

I'm not a big fan of the Boston Police (there was an altercation with them at North Station when they were on "strike" and I've never forgiven them for harassing me). But, when I went to BU and lived near Kenmore Square, it was common knowledge that it was a dangerous area when the Red Sox won big games. We knew it wasn't safe to go there. Even if we just planned to cheer and hang out with other fans, we knew it could get ugly fast and we'd be caught in the middle of it.

Yes, it's sad when people can't move about the city, but in an effort to protect ourselves, most of us stayed put. Part of me blames the cops for letting it get out of control, but I really think they are handcuffed when it comes to these things and are forced to stand by until all he!! breaks loose. Then it's too late. Then people who may have made a wrong decision, but were otherwise doing nothing wrong get killed.

We didn't learn when the kid died after the Pats victory and I fear we won't learn after this. :(

All of these kids are "good kids". Add beer and put a few thousand together in Kenmore Square and they're morons. That's just how it is. My 23-year-old sister still goes with her friends and this could be her someday.

I was watching rioters (excuse me, "people celebrating") live on TV that night, outside the Sovereign Bank. There were no police there, I'm sorry. There just wasn't. They moved in later in a line all in riot gear and pushed the crowd down the street, and who knows where the idiots ended up after that....probably a block away, doing the same thing. This is not a good plan.
