He had his first piano competition today, and got the highest score possible! He worked so hard on the song, and I'm so happy to see it pay off for him. The judge commented especially on his even rhythm, which was one of the things he put the most effort into during practicing, along with his poise and his musical feeling.

Yay, S!!! :cheer2:

CONGRATULATIONS to your DS! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

As a mom of 2 DSs who both play multiple musical instruments (including piano/keyboard), I know it's not a small thing that your DS won his competition! Congrats on all of his hard work paying off. :cool2:

Thanks, SeaSpray! :goodvibes

I'm taking lessons, too, so I know how hard it is to get a song right. Learning piano really is something that's done through sheer force of will, I think! But it's so worth it. He really loves it, but he had a moment of pause yesterday when he said something about how he thought he was only taking it for this year, and I very quickly let him know that no, he was going to be taking it for A LOT longer than a year! I explained to him that I consider it just as much a part of his necessary education as I do social studies or history...he has his extracurriculars, and full choice of which of those to stick with or drop, but piano isn't one of them.

I'm a mean mom.

He sure was ok with taking piano again next year after he got such high marks at the contest, though! And his first performance was also last night. He did fantastic.

:thumbsup2 WOOT congrats!! thats awesome!

Congrats!

I've attempted to learn piano and violin before.. but I gave them up for my voice! i just couldn't learn piano or violin.

Congratulations! I know you are proud of him, and hope he is proud of himself. My daughter has been taking piano now for about 9yrs. You are right that it is good for a lot more then just "learning piano". Understanding of piano and of reading music help in developing a lot more than just music; including thought process, pattern recognition, poise and presentation. But it will only work if he enjoys it, at least a little. So may getting this great score help him enjoy it for at least one more year. :goodvibes

Thanks, guys! :cloud9:

Goldengourd, he is VERY proud of himself! He has the ginormous ribbon that he won up on his bulletin board. He definitely enjoys piano, and I hardly ever hear any protests when I tell him it's time to practice. It's just that he was a little bit daunted by the fact that I intended him to do it long-term. You know how long "another couple of years, at least" sounds to a 7-year old!
