And happy for him too.

We are closing in on the end of first grade. It was a little rocky at the beginning, but he was lucky enough to get a great teacher. He was not reading at the beginning of the year, received Title 1 supplemental reading help for about 6 weeks, and then was moved up into the Grade Level reading group.

Well, tonight after dinner, he asked to turn off the TV, so that he could finish reading his chapter book!!!!!!!

I adore reading, and to see him finally getting excited about it, just warms my heart.

Now, who has great suggestions for books he can read over the summer, to keep him 'into' it. I think we are going to give the Magic Treehouse books a whirl, but any other suggestions?

Thanks

Debbie

Debbie, I am so very proud of BBB!!!!! Good for him, but with a mom like you, I wasn't too worried that he wouldn't catch up quickly. Obviously no suggestions here, but I had to say hi and congrats :)

Elaine--I am just SO tickled. I was trying so hard not to get all hung up on 'what he should be doing' and he just did it all in his own time. Like we knew he would.

The only downside to this, is now, we cannot spell things in front of him. :teeth:

Congrats to your son!

As a teacher, I know how important it is to have him read over the summer. The Magic Treehouse books are great. Ask HIM what he is interested in reading this summer. Ask the school librarian for suggestions and ulitize your local library.

Make sure he has his own library card, too!

Have a fun summer!!!

Not only is he CUTE he's smart, too???

Quite a guy you've got there! :bounce:

I remember fighting with reading with Michael in the first grade, it was a struggle. Not only am I a reader and a writer, I have a degree in English Comp Lit and my KID doesn't like to read???? It was hard for me.....

In the fourth grade he's brought home noting but As in Language Arts! It's been a struggle but well worth it!

Give our little guy a BIG hug for me!!

God bless,

Robinrs

Pinnie--we already have a 'date' on Saturday, after his baseball game to go get his library card. He's pretty excited about that too. We also got him a subscription to Nat'l Geographic Kids, which he is finally enjoying too. Thanks for the advice. For a soon to be second grader, about how much time would you reccommend he read over the summer. DH and I will still read to him, but for on his own? I was thinking 15 or 20 minutes unless he wants to do more? It's so hard walking that fine line between encouragement and 'pushing'

Robin, we are not TOO proud, huh?? One giant hug duly given for Auntie Robin!!

I found the Arthur Good Sports and plain Arthur series to be good chapter books too. I buy pretty much any book my DS (now 8)seems interested in. We're MUCH better off financially than my family was when I was growing up, and my mom always found a way to buy books for me.....I figure there are worse vices!!!

The real reason I replied is to say congrats, and thanks for giving me some hope. My younger DS (6) is in Kindergarten and is sounding out 3 and 4-letter words but is really struggling compared to the other kids. Everyone else in the family is an avid reader (DS 8 has finished all Harry Potter books on his own), and it's been hard for me....I never had to work with my oldest. So, I struggle with patience, and trying not to try so hard that I completely turn him off it.

Cross your fingers for me.

My DS LOVED the Magic Treehouse Books! Good choice and there are so many!

Other favorites included:
1)Henry and Mudge(these are very easy)
2)Nate the Great
3)Cam Jansen
4)Clifford Books(also very easy)
5)Berenstain Bears

Books DS didn't like but many other kids(boys and girls) like:
1)Junie B Jones
2)Amelia Bedelia

That's all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure I'll come up with more

Here's some other suggestions.

My daughters 1st grade teacher is also a reading specialist.

Here are some of the ones she has suggested to my daughter this year.

Nate the Great
Marvin Redpost (Louis Sachar)
Curious George
Cynthia Ryland books
Amelia Bedelia books
Henry and Mudge books

Magic Tree house may be a bit much. My daughter has those as well and its too challenging for her at the moment.

You can check on books to determine the reading level. Look on the back cover of books to see its RL= Reading Level. Most newer books will have this. If the RL is say 2.6, that would be the 6th month of 2nd grade, or about more than halfway 2nd grade.

That's wonderful Deb :teeth:
NO suggestions for you, but wanted to say congrats !! :)

Great news! My son really liked Junie B. Jones at that age. He also liked the pokemon series (not exactly classic literature, but hey, he was reading!) Magic Tree House came more in the middle of 2nd grade through 3rd grade.

You might also see if he's interested in biographies. They have those at all reading levels. If he's into sports, there's a whole series titled things like on the court with Michael Jordan, on the half pipe with Tony Hawke, etc. They're also available on tape/CD if they are too far above his reading level. My DS liked the biographies of people like the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong.

No suggestions on reading materials, but wanted to give a big thumbs up to your son!!!:) Sometimes it's just that tiny bit of extra help that gets them going on their way..

I too LOVE to read and so far my granddaughter is following in my footsteps.. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!
