So just where do 911 operators work from anyway?

I've always wondered this, its kind of been a mystery to me. Thankfully, I've never had to call them. Do they work out of the state police barrocks, or what?
I used to love that show Rescue 911, never missed an episode.

Here, in Northampton County, PA, they have a fairly new building near our county home for the aged.

Same here. They acutally have their own building behind the police station, but they're in the same complex.

Ours work out of a place 45 minutes from here.

Our 911 calls are routed through the state police, they are in 3 different places in the ENTIRE state...yes you read that correctly. One of them happens to be in this town

before E-911 when you called 911 it went to your local police department, but no more. Now everything is toned from the state police.

I used to work in a little room not much bigger than my walk in closet. Desk, radios (Fire, Police, Municipal Power Co, and Public Works) and a toilet (closed off) in the corner in a town hall built in 1912. At night I'd be the only person in this 3 story, old, creaking building. Course this was in the early 1970's in a small town in Massachusetts. At that same town they now work in a converted class room in an old school.

Round here it's the Sheriffs dept that does all that and they work in the county jail.

Around here, there's a small town where the 911 phone rings at the DMV. (I don't know where it rings at night after they close.) One of my friends was having his license renewed, and the phone rang, and the person waiting on him said, "Do you mind if I get that? That's the 911 phone."

Obviously, he let her get the phone. No one likes waiting longer than they have to at the DMV, but that's an exception.
