I had that surgery on my back yesterday. Microdiscectomy (L5-S1), with a transpedial decompression (I think that's what they called it). Today is ROUGH. I feel like I have the biggest hangover ever. Nausea, lightheaded, lots of soreness at the surgical sight, BUT the good news is that the surgery was a SUCCESS! The crippling leg pain is gone baby gone! My right leg and foot are still numb and weak but the surgeon said it will take a while for it to heal since...get this...

The piece of disc he removed was TEN TIMES LARGER than the pieces he typically removes during a discectomy AND it was shoved out and up into my spinal cord! If I hadn't had surgery I would have suffered permanent damage and possibly paralysis. I would've hugged him if I was able to stand!

I kept reading about people who suffered for YEARS with pinched nerves, pain, numbness and weakness and my pain started a shade over a week ago. I kept thinking maybe I was being a big wuss for demanding surgery so soon. In a weird way I am glad it was so serious. Makes me feel "justfied" in going for the operation.

So now I am recuperating. Getting better now that I finally started drinking water (8 glassesso far today!). No appetite yet, but I haven't needed my post op pain percocet at all today.

So glad the crippling leg pain is gone for you!! It is so worth it to have this surgery when you really need it. :goodvibes

that is great news! thanks for the update and get well soon!

Get well! My mom just had major back surgery about a week and a half ago. She's in pain but in good spirits, let's nothing get her down. Good luck and enjoy the "rest."

Glad to hear it was a success, hope your recovery is quick!!

I'm so glad it went well :thumbsup2

I know what you're saying about people suffering for a long time. My pain comes and goes but I usually have none. I was unable to have the injection last week because I was having terrible back spasms and couldn't get out of the wheel chair to get onto the table :sad2: I opted to just see my Dr. who is in the same hospital and start another steroid dose pack. I'm much improved now, although still walking kind of bent over. But hey, at least I can walk now ;) I definately hit some low points over the last two weeks mostly due to frustration of not being able to do things for myself. I don't know how people can do it all the time.

I'm really glad you have a success story

So glad to hear that your surgery was a success! :cool1:

I also had surgery on Monday. Mine was on my knee. Its the second one I've had on that knee, so far, and I'm in lots of pain, but SO glad to have the procedure over with and to get started on my rehabilitation.

Best of luck with your continuing healing process...I'm right there with you.

Don't try to tough it out with the pain meds, take them ON SCHEDULE or they won't work as well and it will slow your healing. Great update and results :thumbsup2

Wow how great. :thumbsup2

My dh is suffering from about the same thing you are. Right now he is trying physically therapy and the back injections. It really sucks.:headache:

How were they able to fully diagnose your problem?

I had an MRI. They ordered the MRI on Wednesday, got me in to see the surgeon on Thursday and scheduled surgery for the following Tuesday.

My dh had his back surgery 6 weeks ago and got the ok to go back to work this coming Monday! He had the horrible leg pain too and it's gone! Good luck to you!

Thanks! I will pass it along. He told me that he had an MRI 9 months ago and had a herniated disc. As you can imagine after almost a yr of this stuff it really puts your life on a different path. It really stinks.:sad2:

Get well soon and hoping for a speedy recovery.

I had back surgery 2 years ago so I know what you are going through~the 1st week is the worst and it will get easier If you need the pain meds take it!! You don't need to go through anymore pain than you have been going through.

I spent alot of time on the dis~made my days go faster!!!

:cool1: great news...heres to a speedy recovery! (Oh, and stay away form Idol, it may increase your pain ;))

I actually made DH remove it from our DVR. I just don't care about those kids at all. HOWEVER, we have a boat-load of Disney shows from the travel channel and such on the DVR and that's keeping me in good spirits and giving me extra cause to get well since we have a trip planned for October (if the medical bills don't wipe out our savings).
