I had that surgery on my back yesterday. Microdiscectomy (L5-S1), with a transpedial decompression (I think that's what they called it). Today is ROUGH. I feel like I have the biggest hangover ever. Nausea, lightheaded, lots of soreness at the surgical sight, BUT the good news is that the surgery was a SUCCESS! The crippling leg pain is gone baby gone! My right leg and foot are still numb and weak but the surgeon said it will take a while for it to heal since...get this...
The piece of disc he removed was TEN TIMES LARGER than the pieces he typically removes during a discectomy AND it was shoved out and up into my spinal cord! If I hadn't had surgery I would have suffered permanent damage and possibly paralysis. I would've hugged him if I was able to stand!
I kept reading about people who suffered for YEARS with pinched nerves, pain, numbness and weakness and my pain started a shade over a week ago. I kept thinking maybe I was being a big wuss for demanding surgery so soon. In a weird way I am glad it was so serious. Makes me feel "justfied" in going for the operation.
So now I am recuperating. Getting better now that I finally started drinking water (8 glassesso far today!). No appetite yet, but I haven't needed my post op pain percocet at all today.
