So frustrated.

Please don’t allow someone like that to hurt you. It is no one’s business why you need a car with a backup camera. I do not have a disability but I rely on my backup camera all the time. People on the internet can be so mean. Don’t give them the time of day. I hope you find the perfect car for your daughter💐
Very true. I live in a row of townhouses and the neighbourhood kids ride their bikes in our shared driveway. While they’re all good at moving out of the way of cars and parents of smaller children do keep watch, I’m so much happier with the camera as reassurance that I’m not about to hit a child that’s not paying attention. Accidents happen so often and the technology is now available to prevent them, of course we should all have cameras if able to.

Your big mistake....JMO...people share too much. Where you posting in a disability section on Reddit? If not why mention your daughters disability? Lots of people are interested in cool auto stuff. Auto parking. Adaptive cruise control. Back up cameras.

I think, without any evidence to support it, factory stuff is more reliable then cameras and other stuff installed aftermarket. Without a doubt easier to fix, any car dealer can fix it. Some of the stuff installed by shops are sketchy.

All of the instructions tell us not to rely exclusively on camera and other aids. At a minimum walk around the car so your daughter knows exactly what shows up on the camera and if there are any blind spots.

There is no issue if a disabled person needs hand controls to drive is allowed to drive. I have no idea if a driver that has to rely exclusively on backup cameras, which are not designed to be used exclusively, is allowed to drive under state driving qualifications. Your case would be stronger if the camera allowed your daughter to drive easier but when necessary she could use mirrors or turn around, possibly with pain.
Nice victim blaming.

I posted about needing a car with a backup camera on Reddit and people were so dismissive. I replied to one poster that my daughter has a disability and really does need one. I was told, "If you NEED a backup camera you should cut up your driver's license." I'm nearly in tears because I have been working her entire life to make sure she could be independent. Just venting.
Honestly, both DH and I need the backup cameras, as we have to park in very tight spaces in front of our house sometimes. Not to mention little ones can easily be in a blind spot when you are backing out in a parking lot, I know for DH, it has saved him from hitting a little one more than once, of course his car also has emergency braking that will stop if say a little one runs behind the car (which has also happened).

So if anyone says a backup camera isn't a necessity, they are the ones that should have their licenses cut up, honestly if it saves even one life or even injury, isn't it worth it?

Just an FYI, all vehicles built from May 2018 on have to come with backup cameras in the U.S., some of course are better than others.

Nice victim blaming.
Rude and not even close to being an accurate summary of my post.
It's reddit. A lot people are rude on that site so don't take it personally. It's easy to get a snide remark for asking a question or giving your opinion. A lot communities are toxic.
Exactly. It's not victim blaming to suggest a person shouldn't read or post on forums which tend to be rude unless the person has thick skin. DIS is a moderated forum. Posters can complain and extremely rude posts get edited or deleted. In some cases posters get a time out.

Other internet forums almost never edit content; maybe dirty words filter. maybe criminal content. The posts the OP was complaining about is permitted in many internet forums.

Based on reaction to my PP I'm not doing a good job explaining myself.

People who picnic over a landfill should expect objectionable odors.

People who post on DIS expect reasonably civil and polite discussions. Posters who have an issue can PM a moderator. Posts can be edited or deleted. Occasionally a moderator may have to tell a poster he is overly sensitive.

There are other forums which are unmoderated. There are virtually no rules or policies. Some posters may enjoy being rude and confrontational

The OP may be just venting; in which I was wrong to post. BUT the only solution is to avoid those forums. There is virtually nothing that can be do to stop horrible behavior.

Any advice which suggests there is any way to improve the tone is way off base. Don't waste a single second thinking you can change the mind of those posters. The only way to avoid feeling like a victim is to avoid the situation.

What was the line from war games the only way to win is not to play the game.

I know it's hard not to let people get to you, but try not to let them get to you.

My mom's car is low mileage and an older Toyota but doesn't have a camera. She mentioned to my husband how she would love to have one in her car and he told her that you can buy them and get one installed.

It may be something to look into.
Well, I hope you have better luck with that than we did. I had an older Toyota with fairly low mileage and after my husband got a new car with a back up camera, it didn't take me long to see the advantage of having a back up camera. So DH bought a back up camera, tried to install it himself, and the next time I came home from a trip (WDW by myself), there was my brand new Toyota that came with a back up camera.

Lucky lady :teeth:

DH sounds like he is a keeper… enjoy that backup camera and the new car!

I'm lucky in that my husband does a lot of work on cars (engine fixes, alternators, etc.) as a hobby, so if my mom wanted it done, I think that would be less trouble than some of his other projects.

That being said, enjoy your new car....it's nice when you come home to something like that!
