I'm heading from wash dc to madison, wi this week and considering going thru indianapolis instead of the multiple state assorted i-80/90 turnpikes to avoid the tolls. I've driven both ways before but don't recall any tolls before reachiing IL when I took the more southern non-turnpike I-70 route. Mapquest says "portions toll" on this way too now though so perhaps things have changed.

I've tried accessing each state's website for turnpike info but you have to know where you get on & off to even begin to get an idea. There's got to be an easier way. Does anybody know of a website or ap that'll let me plan a route and see the tolls calculated in? Am I just missing it somewhere?

IMO it's really silly for mapquest to calculate gas costs since I know how far it is and how many miles I get per tank. What I need is something I don't already know. Don't you think calculating tolls would provide much more useful information for users??

Are you a member of AAA? If so, they should be able to calculate the tolls for you (it might depend on which club you are in, but I know mine will). You could also request a TripTik.

Other than that, I have no suggestions. I have tried to calculate tolls myself, and I lose patience fast. :headache:

Thanks for the suggestion. We do have AAA so I'll have to call and ask in the morning.

I used a trip tik the first time I went and that's how I ended up taking the longer route around Indianapolis instead of the northern turnpike route that mapquest directs me to. The triptik didn't list tolls but that was several yrs ago and I never thought to ask. It seemed like it took us forever to get there though so, for the way home, I used mapquest and experienced toll plaza sticker shock all the way across the country. Of course it's an hour or so faster and about 100 miles shorter, plus gas and rest stops are very convienently placed without exiting the highway, so I suppose you get what you pay for.

Living in MD where our highways are free and tolls are only for bridges or tunnels, I guess I'm spoiled. I expect to the tolls in FL - they're small potatoes though compared to the turnpikes going east/west. I can't imagine living in IL - it seemed like every time I passed a light post there was a toll to stop & pay...
