I've been hearing the people on SSI and SSDI are going to be receiving a $250.00 stimulus check. Does that also apply to children who are in SSDI?

I didn't hear about this. :confused3 I'll have to check this out as DH is on SSD.

Recipients of Social Security Disability benefits will get a stimulus payment

01:00 AM EST on Sunday, March 1, 2009

Following is the first installment of a two-part MoneyLine series answering questions from readers about the new federal economic stimulus law. (The second part appears tomorrow.)

If you receive Social Security disability benefits, will you be eligible for a one-time $250 payment as a result of the new federal economic stimulus law? That’s the question a man from West Warwick asked MoneyLine:

Q: I collect SSDI. Will I be getting a rebate check for $250, or no?

— T.J., West Warwick

A: You will. The new law says that adults who receive Social Security benefits will receive a one-time payment of $250. (The new law calls them “economic recovery payments.” I sometimes call them “rebates” or “economic stimulus payments.”)

The payments will go to people who receive Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security survivor benefits, and Social Security disability income (SSDI) benefits, said Kurt Czarnowski, communications director for the Social Security Administration’s New England region.

You’ll get the $250 rebate — tax-free, with no strings attached — if you were eligible for some type of Social Security benefit (including SSDI) in either November 2008, December 2008 or January 2009, Czarnowski said.

You won’t have to take any steps; the rebate will be sent to you automatically, in the same way you now receive your benefits.

So if your Social Security benefits are deposited directly into your bank or credit union account, for example, you’ll get your one-time $250 rebate by direct deposit, too.

(Keep in mind, though, that the rebates are subject to federal offset rules. As a result, the amount of your rebate could be reduced — possibly to zero — if you’re delinquent on certain items, such as taxes or federally backed student loans, the new law says.)

The Social Security Administration is working on details for distributing the payments to the program’s 55 million beneficiaries.

But the agency says that everyone who is entitled to a payment will be paid by late May, so you should receive yours by the first week in June.

Part of the agency’s Web site is now reserved for information about the economic stimulus payments:

www.socialsecurity.gov/payment

Be sure to check out the “Frequently Asked Questions” link, which has lots of details about the rebates.

Q: Will I get a check from this bill this time? I’m on SSI. Last time, I didn’t.

— M.A., Pawtucket

A: You’ll get it this time.

The economic stimulus bill was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on Feb. 17.

When I read through it, one of the first things I looked for was whether beneficiaries of the federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program would be eligible for the one-time $250 rebate.

The law specifically says that SSI beneficiaries are eligible.

This is good news. Under last year’s economic stimulus law, SSI beneficiaries weren’t eligible for rebates.

Tomorrow: A brief look at the newly expanded federal income tax credit for first-time homebuyers.

The above states that this is only for adults, which makes sense. Children aren't supposed to be a source of income for their families vs. adults who may live solely on SSI or SSDI.---Kathy

:thumbsup2 Thank you for this information. I try to follow the economic stimulus plan but there is so much in it that I have definitely missed things.

It appears that my DH will qualify for the $250. :thumbsup2

Mom got hers this week and not sure what date as I was busy screaming at her that I was coming to make dinner after spending 3 minutes paying the bills. I just know that hers is in and not mine.

If you got your notice early then check the bank account as there is no notice that I know of. I got my paper notice later than mom so I will have to wait.

SHOPPING TIME
