IMO - for most users the nook color is not even close to being on the level of the iPad or tablet computers. Most users need to take the product out of the box and have it just work.
For those with a tinkering background then the option you mentioned might be reasonable. Unless I miss my guess the OP and many others users do not fit that category.
Oh, I definitely agree. That's why I said that my opinion is that the iPad, especially with the recent price drop, is a better choice than the Nook Color. But I know several people who rooted their Nook Colors and think they are great little Android tablets. It is an option, just not one most people would want to bother with.
That said, it really depends on the user. The iPad does more than the Nook Color right now, and the first generation costs only a little more than the Nook Color does. For me, that makes the iPad a better choice. But if the Nook Color does everything that the user wants it to, then it might not be worth the small price difference to bump up to the iPad or the larger price jump to a different tablet computer. And if you are comfortable rooting the device, then the Nook Color is sort of the best of both worlds since it's more budget friendly than the other tablets and more open in terms of software than the iPad. For most people that wouldn't be a consideration, but for many it is.
